ROCKLIN, Calif. - In a non-conference matchup against visiting Pacific Union, The William Jessup women's basketball game broke a school record for most points scored in a single contest with a 96-49 victory advancing to 3-1 overall to start the season.
A balanced attack and hot shooting from the entire roster helped jumpstart the Warriors to one of the best shooting displays the school has ever witnessed.
"Everybody was ready to be energetic when they set foot on the court," said Warriors head coach
Kurt Westendorp in his response to his team's effort. "We didn't really have to fire anybody up, people were ready to go."
In her first game back since being sidelined with a head injury, Anisah Smith got the Warriors started in the first quarter by scoring 10 of the first 15 points to start off the contest. Smith went on to score 12 points in the period to give the Warriors an early 25-12 lead.
After a hot start, the second quarter was much of the same as the Lady Warriors shot 58 percent from the field. A few Leilua Iosia layups here and a couple Iesha Mejorado points there helped further the cushion with the scoreboard flashing a 20-point advantage heading into the halftime break.
The Warriors kept the foot on the gas pedal to start the second-half, using a 15-2 run to pull even further away from the Pioneers. The quarter ended with the Lady Warriors leading 77-37.
Mejorado took advantage of every minute on Horton Court Wednesday night and had herself the best quarter of her college career in the fourth.
Mejorado found wiggle room in between defenders to squeeze her way in for a layup and shortly after would make her first career three-pointer. Mejorado tallied five points and dished out two assists in the quarter to put the icing on the cake of a spectacular performance from the Warriors.
"It was so much fun. I've been struggling a little bit here and there, but I'm just blessed with the opportunity and grateful for it," said Mejorado.
The final buzzer sounded, but not after Jessup broke school records in total points scored in a single game (96), field goal percentage (56.5%), and field goals made (39).Â
Smith led the way with a team-high 16 points and six rebounds. Mejorado and Janelle Luu each chipped in 10, while Jessica Armstrong fell one point short of a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.
The Lady Warriors will head to Redding for the FCA Tournament to take on Corban University at 5 pm on Saturday.
Said Westendorp, "We want to try and play with excellence because if you're pursuing excellence, success is going to follow."
