Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Danny Vietti

Lady Warrior Defense Not Enough in Loss to Corban

SALEM, Oregon. - In their second game in as many days of a Northwest road trip, the William Jessup women's basketball team fought till the final buzzer but were outplayed in the final quarter to take a 62-55 loss to the Corban Warriors.

Despite taking a 4-point lead into the fourth quarter, the Warriors offense hit a standstill in the final period and were unable to stop a Corban team that saved their best offense for the final minutes.

After winning the opening tip, the Warriors struggled to shoot the ball early on as Corban began the game on an 11-4 run. The tandem of Lily Hagerty and Miranda Zaragoza would heat up Jessup's offense, as a Hagerty jump shot gave the Warriors their first lead of the game in toward the end of the period.

Jessup began the second quarter facing an 18-16 deficit, but Anisah Smith got the squad rolling with a trey-ball from the wing, followed by a couple Olivia Luu free throws and another three-pointer by Jessica Armstrong

Neither team would back down, trading baskets through the end of the first half with Corban going into the break with a 36-31 lead.

The defensive intensity from Jessup found a new level to start the second half. The Warriors of Jessup held the Warriors of Corban to just seven points in the third period, allowing Corban to shoot just 17 percent from the floor. Janelle Luu's saucy reverse lay-in in the final minute gave Jessup a 47-43 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes.

Seeing Jessup's defense tearing their offense apart, Corban's defense kicked itself into fifth gear, forcing five turnovers and turning them into points on the offensive end. Jessup managed to make just three baskets in the final period, while Corban's offense had their best showing of the night in the final minutes.

Corban's blistering defense would not allow Jessup to mount any type of comeback, and the final buzzer would sound with Jessup being handed consecutive losses for the first time since their last Northwest road tilt back in early November.

Zaragoza led Jessup with 16 points and three rebounds, while Hagerty finished with 10 points and three steals. Anisah Smith added 9 points and four assists.

The Warriors will take a break from games in respects to the holidays and will start back up on December 30th with another road contest against California Maritime Academy at 5:30 pm.
