Last Second Shot Doesn’t Fall as Warriors Drop 99-96 OT Battle

Murry and Newman Combine for Ten 3-Pointers as Jessup Loses Third Straight Game

COSTA MESA, Calif. –  Coming off a loss Thursday at Hope International, the Warriors looked to snap their losing skid as they traveled to Costa Mesa to take on a Vanguard Lions squad that had already fallen to Jessup this season. After 40-minutes of basketball, overtime was needed to decide a winner, where the Lions' fast start would lead them to a 99-96 victory.

Leading by five in the final minute of Saturday's GSAC affair, the Warriors were unable to keep their advantage as Vanguard took the lead with prolific shooting behind the arc. Freshman Brandon Lindsey (Tyrone, GA), with a chance to put Jessup ahead, went 1-of-2 at the line with less than 20-seconds to go, evening the score at 81-81 to send the game to overtime.

In the extra frame, a quick 4-0 run by Vanguard quickly put Jessup behind by two possessions. The Warriors would never regain the lead or even tie the game up from that point on.

Trailing by five with under 20-seconds to go in overtime, senior Kelton Newman (Elk Grove, CA) hit a heavily contested 3-pointer to cut the lead to two, and Jessup caught a break when the Lions went just 1-of-2 at the line with six seconds to play. Pushing the ball up the court, Lindsey got off a three at the buzzer, but it caught back iron.

In 32-minutes of play, Lindsey scored 21 points while dishing out 9 assists and bringing down 5 rebounds. The freshman guard shot 8-of-13 from the field.

Leading in the scoring column for Jessup Saturday was senior Chris Murry (Fremont, CA) with 25. Murry connected on 6-of-11 from three-point range, and brought down 5 rebounds to go with his 5 assists. Newman added 16 points including four made 3-pointers.

For the Lions, Shacquille Dawkins led all scorers with a game high 26 points. Zach Allmon added 21 points and 7 rebounds to his team's efforts, with Victor Evans (21) and Brandon Hood (12) each adding double-figures as well.

With the loss, Jessup's third in a row, the Warriors fall to 16-8 overall on the season. In conference play, Jessup sits at 6-4, which places them in a tie with Westmont College for fourth place. The top six teams will qualify for this season's GSAC Tournament.

Jessup will return home to Warrior Arena this Thursday for #Play4Kay night, when they take on Biola University at 7:30 p.m. This will be the Warriors' second and final regular season meeting with the Eagles, as Jessup was victorious in their GSAC opener in La Mirada back on December 6. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.
