LINCOLN, Calif. – The Warriors avoided the rain this weekend as they welcomed the San Diego Christian College Hawks to McBean Park in Lincoln for a three-game series. A huge day at the plate by Justin Chase helped power the Jessup offense to a victory Saturday, but it was the Hawks who stole the next two games to take the series two games to one.
GAME ONE
The biggest weapon within the Jessup lineup in game one Saturday was that of designated hitter Justin Chase. Chase went 3-for-4, driving in six runs in the win while collecting two doubles in the process. In the third inning, Chase launched a two-run homer over the right field fence. One pitch later, Manuel Galvan made it back-to-back home runs as he hit a solo shot to right.
For the Hawks, Vahn Bozoian was easily the biggest thorn in Jessup's side. The outfielder had a career day, as he launched home runs in the third, sixth, and eighth innings. Bozoian went 4-for-5 at the plate, driving in all five of his team's runs.
Hayden Piner earned the win for Jessup, tossing six innings while allowing four runs on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout. Sam Curtis would earn the five-out save in relief, while also managing to go 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored. Jessup took Saturday's opener by the final of 9-5.
GAME TWO
San Diego Christian took an early lead in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, tacking on a run in the second inning. Chase would even up the game in the third, scoring Rory Petersen on a sacrifice fly for Chase's seventh RBI of the day. A solo home run in the fifth put the Hawks back on top, and they would add two more in the inning as they took game two by the final of 4-1.
Left-hander Tristan Prybylinski was handed the ball in game two, as he went five innings while allowing the four runs on six hits, walking three and striking out just one. Manuel Velasquez pitched two innings in relief, allowing just one hit over that time while striking out one as well.
GAME THREE
Entering Sunday having split the first two games of the series, Jessup sent Calvin Bonilla to the mound to start for the Warriors. Bonilla lasted 6.2 innings while allowing three runs on seven hits. However, it was the Hawks' Mike Young who bested the Warriors with his solid eight inning day. Young took a perfect game into the sixth inning, and allowed just two hits all day as the Warriors fell 9-0.
Two runs in the fourth started the scoring Sunday, but a six -run eighth inning sealed the deal as the Hawks were able to push their lead to nine runs. Bozoian hit his fourth home run of the weekend during this rally, and San Diego would also be helped by five Jessup errors on the day, four of which occurred in the eighth inning.
Jessup looks to get back in the win column this weekend as they travel down to Southern California. The Warriors will take on Arizona Christian on Thursday at a neutral site in Costa Mesa. Following that, Jessup will open up a three-game series on Friday in Anaheim against Bethesda University of California.
