SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – After allowing securing a series victory Friday afternoon, while holding their opponents scoreless through the first two games, Jessup and Westmont hit the diamond again on Saturday to wrap up the three-game set. Westmont's bats finally began to show signs of life, as it was Jessup who struggled to cross home as Westmont took the series finale 9-1.
Pitching for Westmont was Sean Coyne, and Coyne continued his strong season as the starter improved his record to 4-1 on the year. Coyne lasted 6.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits, walking two and striking out six. The Westmont bullpen would combine for 2.1 innings of relief, allowing just two batters to reach base via hit, with one more reaching on a walk.
Jessup lone run of the day came in the top of the seventh, as the Warriors pieced together a two-out rally that would force Coyne out of the game. With two on and two out, left-fielder Alex Nasukewicz to right field, driving in Leander Carter. Jessup would strand two runners on base in the inning, and nine total on the day.
For Westmont, their big innings came in the fifth and seventh when they plated three runs each. The big blow in the fifth came on a two-run homer by Neil Sterling. Sterling went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the win for Westmont. Westmont would also add a run in the first, third, and eighth innings to pad their lead.
Hayden Piner received the starting nod for the Warriors Saturday. Piner would take the loss as his record falls to 2-6, lasting four innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits, striking out and walking four.
Calvin Bonilla,
Manuel Velasquez,
Mikey Saldana, and
Jacob Wilson would all combine for four innings of relief work.
This weekend's series against Westmont is Jessup's first series victory of the season. The Warriors' record on the year sits now at 8-26, just one win shy of tying their mark from 2014-15 for the most wins in program history. The 2014-15 season was the first in program history.
Jessup will have a chance to tie and surpass their previous winning mark this week when they play host to another GSAC foe in the likes of Vanguard University at McBean Park. The Warriors and Lions are set to begin the series on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m., with the finale being a doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 11:00 a.m.
