ROCKLIN, Calif. - Hitting the pavement for their first road game, the Warriors had a slow start out the gate but bounced back in the second half against Sierra Nevada to score three goals in the final 12 minutes for the 3-2 win in overtime advancing to 1-1 overall.
"We had to grind out today's win," head coach
Greg Lazaga said. "The first half we came out tentative and flat. We allowed the opponent to push the pace. The second was a different story."
Being in familiar territory, the Eagles struck first with back-to-back goals in the 23rd and 28th minutes of play, outshooting the Warriors in the first half 9-4. But senior goalie
Robert Harmelink came through with two tremendous saves to cut Sierra Nevada's attempts heading into halftime down 2-0.
With the final 45-minutes of regulation before them, the team worked hard to push their way back and set the tone in the second half despite the two-goal deficit. Now in goal for the Warriors,
Nick Garcia took over where Harmelink left off defending the posts with five big saves before the Warriors attack.
With 10-minutes of hard work before them, senior
Aaron Roudebush struck the net first for the Warriors with an assist from Connor Entz, trailing 2-1 with under seven minutes left in regulation.
But with the pressure high and momentum leading the way, the Warriors scored again, this time from senior
Christian Guzman, set up by Roudebush for the tying goal in the final minute of play, just 14-seconds remaining on the clock to send it into overtime.
Coming this far, the team was not about to go into the 10-minute overtime without fighting for the win, and that they did.
In the 95th-minute junior returner,
Adolfo Guzman scored the game-winning goal, his second goal of the season to lift the Warriors over the Eagles, 3-2.
"We became the aggressors in the second half," Lazaga said. "The boys showed a determination to fight until the last minute and we walked away with a gritty win."
