Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Brie Campbell

Warriors Win Home Field Advantage over Simpson, 7-1

Adolfo Guzman and Oscar Munoz Led the Warriors with a Pair of Goals Each

ROCKLIN, Calif. - With the heat on their heels resulting in an early start against Simpson, the Warriors set the pace with a 3-0 lead at halftime and ran away with the 7-1 victory for the first match on Jessup Field this season, improving to 2-1 overall.

After months of renovations, the men's soccer team was ready to break in the new grass, being the first game of the season at Jessup Field for the home fans to enjoy. And they did not disappoint with an impressive offense spark to take down the Red Hawks.

"Playing at Jessup for the first time this year was a real blessing! The atmosphere of defending your home is always different than playing off campus," head coach Greg Lazaga said. "It was great to be in front of our home fans."

Setting the tempo in the first half, the Warriors proved they came to score outshooting their opponent 13 to 2 in the first 45 minutes of play.

Starting things off the for Warriors just 16 minutes in was freshman Daniel Cervantes scoring his first goal of the season, with the help from newcomer Oscar Munoz for the assist. Shortly after, Munoz had his turn scoring his first goal of the season at the 26-minute mark.

Adding one more in the first half was a seasoned veteran, Adolfo Guzman with the header off a corner kick sent in by Cervantes for the 3-0 lead going into the break.

"I loved our energy in the game from the opening moments," stated Lazaga.  "The boys stuck to the game plan from the start and it allowed us to control the tempo and find opportunities going forward."

Carrying the momentum into the second half, the Warriors let the lone goal for the Redhawks in just three minutes into the second half, but freshman Paul Anderson answered back in the 54th minute scoring his first goal of the season as the Warriors extended the lead, 4-1.

Averaging a goal in the past three games and already clinching one today, Adolfo sent his second goal into the back of the net in the 61st minute for his fourth overall goal this season in the past three games.

Another pair of goals would come to seal the deal for the Warriors by senior Edson Gomez (73rd') and Munoz (77th') for his second goal of the day.

The Warriors will return to the pitch Monday facing Rocky Mountain College at Menlo, and head to Pacific Union College on Thursday before returning back home next Saturday to take on Dominican University.
