ROCKLIN, Calif. – Continuing their two-game home stint, the Warriors took on the San Diego Christian College Hawks. The Warriors found their desired result as the final score landed in their favor, 5-1.
Head coach,
Greg Lazaga, had high expectation from the beginning, "We had competitive fire highlighted on our board in pregame today and I thought that was the way we played...with fire."
The Warriors had the advantage in the first half by maintaining the majority of possession and were able to get off six shots to the Hawk's three shots. That focus and pressure led the Warriors to an early lead as
Paul Anderson sent one flying into the back of the net off of an assist by
Omar Magana. Anderson's goal landed in the 11th minute and was his fifth goal of the season.
The second half saw the Warriors take that pressure and deliver. In the 52nd minute, Anderson earned his sixth goal of the season off of a touch from
Omar Magana. Magana followed up two minutes later giving the Warriors a 3-0 lead. Magana's goal was his 12th on the season. The Hawks put up a strong defense, but
Johnny Muresan broke through in the 61st minute. Muresan's third goal of the season was off of an assist by Anderson and gave the Warriors a 4-0 lead.
In the 68th minute, the Hawks were awarded a penalty kick and were successful at chipping away on the Warriors' lead, taking the score to 4-1. However, the Warriors responded in the 73rd minute as
Heriberto Trevino was successful one-on-one, giving Jessup another goal, 5-1. Trevino's goal was his third this season.
The Warriors played an impressive offensive game with 14 shots overall, seven on goal. The Hawks had seven shots overall, one on goal. Both teams were aggressive the entire 90 minutes. The Warriors had 12 fouls called with five yellow cards, two called in the first and three in the second. The Hawks drew three fouls during gameplay.
"I was proud of the guys for executing the game plan and ultimately finding ways to be dangerous in the box," Lazaga reflected after the match. "It is a good way to get us ready for an important road trip coming up."
Jessup heads out to Arizona on Thursday, October 11, for a match against Arizona Christian University at 8:00 PM. They will also play Ottawa University next Saturday, October 13, at 12:30 PM before returning home.
