Trio Lifts Warriors to Fourth-Consecutive Win

Zaragoza had a career-high against the Keelhaulers with 25 points

VALLEJO, Calif. - The Warriors picked up their fourth consecutive win after defeating the Cal Maritime Keelhaulers 64-55 on the road Wednesday night.

Head coach Kurt Westendorp sees this win as another solid learning experience for his squad as he said, "It's always good to learn how to win games different ways. Tonight was another one of those learning experiences that should come back to help us later in the season."

Early in the first quarter after Lily Hagerty converted on a layup, the Warriors jumped out to a 10-4 lead. However, the Warriors would struggle to close out the quarter and were trailing by two, 14-12 at the end of the first frame.

In the second quarter, the Warriors put together a beautiful display of basketball on both ends of the floor. The Warriors outscored the opposition 22-9 in an offensive surge to take the lead going into halftime, 35-23. It wasn't just offense that contributed to the lead change either.

Defensively, the Warriors forced 13 first-half turnovers, two of which came in back-to-back possessions with just seconds left. Building off the turnovers, the Warriors closed out the half on a high note. With ten seconds left on the clock, the Warriors had the Keelhaulers on their heels with quick passing and eventually, it was Liz Gehweiler who beat the buzzer with a layup.

Overall, Gehweiler was extremely effective in all aspects of the game as she stuffed the stat sheet to the tune of 12 points and 11 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. She didn't stop there either and added 6 assists and 5 steals to boot.

The Warriors and Keelhaulers would duke it out in the third quarter but Jessup would outlast them scoring 18 to their 15, keeping ahold of the lead, 53-38 as the fourth quarter commenced. During the third period, Hagerty was a steady presence on offense as she scored 8 of her 16 in that quarter alone.

Coach Westendorp acknowledged there are many areas the team struggled in but noted the team "really clicked to finish the second quarter and into the third. That stretch was the big difference in tonight's game."

With just over four minutes left to play, Miranda Zaragoza would score two of her career-high 25 points and would give the Warriors an 18 point lead (62-44) their largest of the game. In the span of three minutes, the Warriors lead was slashed down to just seven as they were up 62-55. The late run would fall short and the Warriors escaped with their fourth consecutive win on the year with the final score reading 64-55.

Ultimately coach Westendorp said, "We need to continue to grow to finish out this stretch of games before Thanksgiving, especially with the early start to GSAC play."

The Warriors will be back in action on their home floor on Monday, November 19 at 7:30 PM as they host Westcliff University.
