ROCKLIN, Calif. - The Warriors made program history by winning their sixth-consecutive game taking down the Pacific Union College Pioneers 73-34 on Tuesday afternoon, improving to 7-1 overall, just headed into their first GSAC matchup of the season next week.
The opening quarter was the Warriors strongest offensive stretch during the game as they put up 24 points while holding the opposition to just 10. The Warriors were kick started by an early 11-0 scoring run to start the game. Shooting guard
Anisah Smith was red hot and would score 7 of those 11 points. By the end of the first quarter, the Warriors had the advantage, 24-10, and Smith led the way with 11 points.
In the second quarter, the Warriors offense continued to light up the scoreboard, putting up 17 more points, but it was their defense that stood out. The Warriors didn't allow a single point during the opening five minutes of the quarter. The stifling defense on display forced the Pioneers into committing 8 turnovers in the quarter.
Freshman point guard
JoeLyn Stirton got things rolling in the second half as she swished a three-pointer for the opening basket of the third quarter. Once again the Warriors defense would prove to be a tough test for the Pioneers as they only managed 7 third-quarter points.
With Stirton as the only starter on the floor to begin the fourth quarter, the Warriors showcased their depth as they begin the fourth quarter on an 11-0 scoring run that was sparked by a Caitlyn Bowman three-pointer on the first possession. With three minutes left to play,
Jessica Yee would give a subtle head fake that fooled the defense and her ensuing layup gave the Warriors a 43 point advantage, their largest lead of the day. By the end of the quarter, the scoreboard read 73-34, and it gave the Warriors their sixth-consecutive win.
All twelve of the girls who played tonight for the Warriors ended up scoring at least once. The offense was rolling all game long and the team was led by Smith's 14 points while
Liz Gehweiler and
Lily Hagerty each finished with 11.
The Warriors will have a slight break until their next game, and they will start conference play on November 29th as they host Life Pacific University at 5:30 PM in Warrior Arena on Toys for Tots Night. Bring in a new or gently used toy and admission for the game is free.
