Warriors Enter Conference with a Win

Smith and Zaragoza’s strong offense lead the Warriors to victorious conference start.

ROCKLIN, Calif. –  The Warriors started off the season with a strong pre-conference run resulting six-straight wins, the best win streak in program history. They looked to continue that momentum as they opened the GSAC conference against Life Pacific College. After four quarters, the Warriors accomplished their goal and earned their first conference win, 80-63. The Warriors are now 8-1 overall, 1-0 in conference.

Miranda Zaragoza started Jessup off in the first half with back to back layups which were followed up shortly by two layups by Lily Hagerty to give the Warriors a 6-3 lead. The Warriors kept that momentum up resulting an 18-12 lead by the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter continued in the same strong offense as Zaragoza, Liz Gehwiler, and Olivia Luu aided the Warriors in attaining a 42-26 lead by half. Zaragoza led the first half with 10 points and the bench accounted for 10 of the Warrior's points.

The Warrior found their rhythm in the first half and kept that fire through the second. The third quarter saw both Luu and Anisah Smith joining Zaragoza in double digits. Life Pacific was able to shrink the gap slightly, but the Warriors held on and continued a strong offense which gave the Warriors a 15 point lead at the end of the third quarter.

Hagerty, who was quiet through the second and third quarter, started the fourth with a bang as she sank a three-pointer 20 seconds in. Her shot got the Warriors firing on all cylinders as they fought to maintain their lead. After the final buzzer, the Warriors won, 80-63.

While the Warriors were effective in getting up a number of shots, the real strength was seen in their ability to make the most out of rebounds. The Warriors had 59 rebounds overall, 23 offensive and 36 defensive. From those rebounds, the Warriors sunk 24 second-chance points. Life Pacific had 49 rebounds (29 defensive, 20 offensive), which resulted in 12 second-chance points.

In the end, Anisah Smith led the team in scoring with 18 points; she was closely followed by Miranda Zaragoza and Olivia Luu with 15 each. Smith also led the team in assists with eight and steals with four. Zaragoza led the team in rebounds with 16. The Warriors effectively earned 48 points from the paint, five three-pointers, and had a 37.7 shooting percentage on field goals and 19.2% on three-pointers. Comparatively, Life Pacific had earned 24 points from the paint and had nine three-pointers, while shooting 29.7% on field goals and 40.9% at the arch.

The Warriors continue conference play on Saturday, December 1st, against Hope International University in the Warrior Arena at 12:00 PM.
