Warriors Stun No. 14 Menlo Oaks

Jessup hands Norcal rival Menlo first loss of the season after receiving votes in this week's NAIA Top-25 Coaches Poll

The Warriors headed to the Bay Area to take on the Menlo Oaks for their first road conference game of the season as they stunned the No. 14 team in the country 77-60, advancing to 10-2, 3-0.

It took the Warriors a few minutes into the first quarter to get a flow going offensively, but once they got the ball through the net, the buckets started like rapid fire. By the end of the first quarter, the Warriors were up 18-11.

As the second quarter started the Warriors would build off their strong start and scored 28 points alone in that quarter. Five minutes into the quarter, freshman guard JoeLyn Stirton shook her defender with a well-executed step back before knocking down one of her total five three-pointers on the night. Going into the half-time break, the score read 46-26 in favor of the Warriors.

Early in the third quarter Liz Gehweiler and Olivia Luu would score the opening five points, extending the Warriors lead to 25 points with the score at 51-26. Despite being outscored by three points in the third, the Warriors carried a 17 point lead into the final quarter.

During the second half of action, Miranda Zaragoza once again proved to be a force in the post as she pulled down 9 of her 14 rebounds in the final 20 minutes. Overall, Zaragoza would finish with a double-double, as she also had 12 points on the night.

Throughout the game senior point guard Luu had her leadership on display and with the shot clock running low in the fourth quarter, she muscled her way to the hoop for the scoop and score. After putting together an outstanding display of basketball the Warriors delivered a huge blow giving the 14th ranked Oaks their first loss of the season.

While this was a road game on the schedule, for guard Anisah Smith it was a bit of a homecoming for herself, making the win extra special. Smith spoke on how it felt to share this moment with her team saying, "It felt amazing to come back home and get this dub with my team." Smith added, "Beating a good team at their house isn't an easy thing to do, so I couldn't be any more proud of all 13 girls and how far we've come together."

Offensively the Warriors were in the zone all game long. From the field, they shot 50 percent and were 55 percent from beyond the arc. Liz Gehweiler led the team in scoring with 18 points but she didn't stop there as she also tallied 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and three steals. After the game, Gehweiler said, "The key has been ball movement. Keeping the ball moving till it finds the open person and taking advantage of it. That really opens up the floor and makes driving, shooting and passing a lot easier for all of us."

The aforementioned Stirton also played an outstanding game as she tallied 15 points off the bench knocking down 5 of 6 from distance. It's the second game in a row where Stirton shot the lights out and she cited her teammate's confidence as the reason. Stirton said, "All my teammates encourage me to shoot and knowing my teammates have that faith in my shot makes it easier." Stirton continued saying, "No matter if it's a miss or a make, they are always there and that always makes everything easier."

As great of a game as it was offensively for the Warriors, they also played superb on the other end as well. The smothering defense was persistent all game long from the Warriors as they routinely disrupted the Oaks from establishing any consistent offense. Going into the game the Oaks averaged 85 points per game, but the Warriors held them to a season-low of 60.

The Warriors will be back in action on December 18 in Warrior Arena to take on Bethesda University at 5:30 PM.
