LINCOLN, Calif. - Jessup was back in action at McBean Park today, looking to take control in the battle of the Warriors. In an impressive offensive display, the Warriors would end getting back on track, improving their record to 16-4, 8-1 in conference with a walk-off home run to end it all.
Game 1:
Jessup found themselves trailing Westmont 1-0 headed into the bottom of the 1st frame but the Warriors showed up with their bats on fire. The familiar combo of
Will Law on base and
Austen Swift bringing him around on a homer would put Jessup ahead 2-1. With bases loaded,
Andrew Shaps would find his way across the plate on a
Josh Duitsman single. Quickly following was
Kawai Takemura who's fielders choice would see
Joe Starick home, bringing the Warriors to a 4-1 lead. To polish off the inning,
Steve Pastora would bring in the final run on a
Sam Curtis single, the first frame finishing 5-1 in Jessup's favor.
The Warriors would hold off Westmont in the top of the 2nd, only to distance their lead in the bottom. Pastora's single would bring Shaps home, followed by a Duitsman single that pushed Pastora into scoring position. A Takemura double would see Pastora across the plate to round out the inning, 7-1.
Westmont would get up on the board in the top of the third but the Warriors were determined to continue their offensive dominance, adding another run as Koga's RBI would bring Swift home, putting the scoreline at 8-2.
A run from Westmont in the top of the 4th would prove unthreatening as Jessup answered back with a pair of their own. A two-run RBI from Law would bring Takemura and Duitsman around the bases to give Jessup the 10-3 advantage.
Relentless in their quest for redemption, Jessup would continue to further the distance between them and Westmont in the bottom of the 5th. Pastora's two-run RBI would bring Joe Howell and Shaps in for the 12-3 lead.
With the bases loaded, Shaps drew a walk that would bring home Takemura. Dakota Spiller's RBI would bring home Howell. Jessup would finish the bottom of the 8th leading Westmont 14-4, a scoreline that would hold steady into the 9th.
Tyler Fujimoto would earn the win (3-0), going 3.2 innings, allowing only 3 hits and retiring 3 batters. With the win, Jessup moves to 15-4 overall and 7-1 in GSAC play.
Game 2:
The second game of the day would prove to be a pitching duel as a solo run from Westmont in the top of the 4th would be the only offensive action until the bottom of the 7th.
A strong start from
Tristan Prybylinski, going 4.2 innings giving up only 3 hits and one run while striking out 5 batters. He was followed by an impressive performance by Curtis who would go 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up only 1 hit and collecting 5 Ks.
The Warriors would start off the inning as Swift would get onto base on a fielder's choice, shortly followed by an advancement to 2nd on a passed ball. Shaps double to left field would be enough for the speedy Swift to come home and tie up the ball game at one apiece. With Shaps sitting in scoring position and one out on the scoreboard, Koga stepped into the box to end the game once and for all with a walk-off homer to left field. With this crucial at-bat, the Warriors improve to 16-4 overall and 8-1 in conference play.
"Today was a great response from our group. A lot of different guys found ways to contribute to the cause. I congratulate
Cal Koga on the big swing of the bat. It was a special moment for first-class human being," said Coach
Jake McKinley after taking the series from Westmont in the final inning of game 3.
Jessup will be back at McBean Park on Monday, February 19th, for a non-conference game at 2 pm against Cal State East Bay. They will then take to the road facing off against GSAC opponent Arizona Christian University. "I'm proud of the group for their efforts so far. It'll be a tough week coming up on the road so we will need to prepare well and continue our strong efforts," comments McKinley on his team's upcoming schedule.
