Another Conference Sweep Puts Warriors at Top of GSAC Standings

Jessup defeats Menlo for the series victory, 3-0

LINCOLN, Calif. - Another strong offensive performance by the Warrior's baseball team would aid them in the series sweep over Menlo College in a pair of wins on Sunday afternoon with a program-record 7 home runs in a single game to take the win 13-8, followed by a 5-2 victory in game two over the Oaks. Jessup now 22-5 overall and 12-2 in GSAC matchups holds sole possession of first in the conference by two games with the NAIA Top-25 poll release set to come out on Tuesday.

Head coach for the Warriors Jake McKinley was pleased with his team's hard work, "I'm proud of the guys for their effort this weekend. We were very thin with injuries and the flu, so it was awesome to see several guys step up."

GAME 1
After a scoreless first inning, Steve Pastora would break open the bats sending a high-fly ball over the center field wall as the Warriors took a 1-0 lead. In the third inning, Cal Koga would add his name to the home run list followed by back-to-back home runs by Austen Swift and Joe Starick taking the 4-0 advantage, all runs scored on home runs.

The Oaks would find the scoreboard in the top of the sixth capitalizing on a fielding error and walk by the Warriors with two singles to follow, now just trailing by 2.

However, the Warriors would add one more in the following frame as Shackles started things off with his second double, and was brought in on a Koga single. In the seventh Swift would double and cross the plate for the 6-2 advantage off an Alex Nasukiewicz single.

But it would be the comeback inning for Menlo that followed in the top of the eighth as the Oaks kicked things off with a two-run homer trailing now 6-4 and starting pitcher Tristan Prybylinski retiring for the day after seven innings pitched allowing just four runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts.

With one out the Oaks would continue the rally with a triple followed by another home run to even the score against relief pitcher, Tyler Fujimoto.

Leaving just a pair of innings left to take the lead, the Warriors answered right back in the bottom of the same frame as Shackles would do it again, his third double on the day, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Law would walk and Swift followed with a single to load the bases and Starick stepping into the box. A 3-1 count, the already home run hitter today would send another long ball over the left field wall to clear the bases as the Warriors held on for the 13-8 victory.

Fujimoto (6-0) powered through with the win as Danny Vietti came in to pitch the final inning.

GAME 2
The Oaks would jump on the board first in game two with a sac-fly to right field, but again, it didn't take long for Jessup to respond in the bottom of the inning. Koga would show patience at the plate to take his base as Joey Torres came in to run for the catcher. Swift would join, followed by Starick to load the bases as Pastora sent the tying run home with a sac fly to right field. Nasukiewicz would score Swift for the go-ahead run, 2-1 headed into the second inning.

The Warriors would add another run the next inning as Kawai Takemura made his way around the bases to score on a single by Law. And another in the fourth as Shackles and Takemura singled to get on and Shackles scored on a throwing error by the Oaks.

One more run would reach home plate for the Oaks off starting pitcher and finisher, Steve Pastora (2-0) who recorded the complete game win allowing just two runs on three hits with 9 strikeouts.

A final run by the Warriors would seal the deal in the bottom of the sixth as Law brought in the RBI single for the 5-2 victory over the Oaks.

Jessup will take on Simpson on Tuesday in Redding at 2 pm before hitting the road for a conference series at Vanguard University on Friday and Saturday.
