REDDING, Calif. - Continuing their non-conference schedule, the Warriors traveled north to Simpson University for their second game against the Red Hawks this season. Jessup maintained the lead through six innings, but the Red Hawks continued to chip away at the deficit with a pair of runs in the eighth to come away with the win, 11-9 over the Warriors.
"Baseball is a weird game sometimes and tonight was proof of that. Hats off to Simpson for fighting back and finding a way to win," head coach
Jake McKinley commented.
Starting things off for the Warriors in the top of the third was
Cal Koga who hit a single up the middle to get on base and the come in to score on a triple by
Connor Braun to deep right-center to go up 1-0.
In the following inning, the Warriors would bring in seven runs to extend the lead as
Josh Duitsman led things off with a triple of his own, while
Dakota Spillers had the RBI single to bring him in.
Kawai Takemura would match with his own single and then a pair of walks would load the bases for
Will Law. Law would take a hack at the first pitch sending it over the right-field wall to clear the bases and take a 7-0 lead.
To close out the top of the fourth
Steve Pastora,
Ben Knudsen and Spillers would all hit a single, as the final run of the inning crossed the plate from a walk, Jessup up 8-0.
The Red Hawks would answer back consistently in the following five innings with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, three in the fifth and sixth, one in the seventh and the two-winning runs in the bottom of the eighth.
The final run for the Warriors would come in the top of the fifth as Koga led with a single and Duitsman doubled. With two runners on Pastora would ground out, but Koga would score for their final run of the game.
Taking the mound for the Warriors was a stacked line-up as
Danny Vietti pitched a pair of innings, followed up by
Frankie Corsetti (2IP),
Jake Thompson (1IP),
Justin Vlotho (.2IP),
Andrew Shaps (1.1IP),
Josh Hook and
Cameron Morrow (1IP). Hook (2-2) would take the loss for the Warriors.
The Warriors will face the Red Hawks one more time this season, next Tuesday at McBean Park, but before then, Jessup will return to conference play traveling to No. 24 Vanguard University for a three-game series starting Friday.
"I have the utmost confidence in our group and fully trust we will bounce back and be ready to go this weekend," concluded McKinley.
