MERCED, Calif. - Traveling to their second game of the week, the Warriors hit the turf for their first night game of the season taking on UC Merced in the Bobcats new stadium. In a battle to the finish, the Warriors took the Bobcats to double-overtime but were unable to come up with the golden goal scored in the 101st minute by UC Merced for the 3-2 advantage.
"Tonight the girls fought every single minute of the game," head coach
Rachel Constantini commented. "We came back from being a goal down, performing what is possibly our best offense of the season. Merced is a very talented side, and to parallel them in the stats, is a testament to the growth of this program."
The game would remain scoreless through the first half as the Warriors and Bobcats exchanged looks with a UC Merced leading 7 shots to the Warriors 6. But the second half would spark both sides with four goals.
Striking early in the final half, the Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute, but shortly later
Abigail House would even the score for the Warriors in her first goal of the season.
The go-ahead goal for the Warriors would come in the 77th minute as senior Yvettte Perez returned to the field in today's matchup with her first goal of the season assisted by senior teammate
Janelle Schuette.
The final half was a battle to the finish as the Warriors were again, just one short of matching the Bobcats shots taken, 11-10. A late foul in the final seconds of the game would give the Bobcats a freekick, and the opportunity to tie the game with 18 seconds remaining, with that goal the teams were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation.
Each team would take a shot in the first overtime period but again, no winner would be named to the final 10 minutes were put on the clock. The golden goal would favor the home team in the 101st minute as the Warriors fell 3-2, now 3-4 overall headed into their final week of preseason play.
Constantini is looking forward to the season ahead, "I truly believe this is a special group of girls that will take this experience and allow it to make them stronger as a team."
