SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The Warriors volleyball team played the second of a two-game road trip as they took on their second ranked opponent in a row, this time facing undefeated in conference play The Master's University. Despite a couple hard-fought sets, the Warriors drop it in three to the No. 14 Mustangs (18-25, 15-25,19-25).
This was a difficult road trip for the Warriors and head coach
Shasta Millhollin recognized that saying, "This road trip is arguably the toughest road trip on our schedule, but we have continued to fight like crazy every match."
Initially, the Warriors got off to a rocky start, but after scoring four straight points they brought the game within one as they trailed 8-7 in the opening frame. The scoring burst was short lived and the Warriors went on the lose the set, 25-18.
An early kill in set two by Mackenzie Reeder-Esparza once again would get the Warriors within striking distance as they trailed by just one (4-3). But Jessup would be unable to harness the momentum and gave up seven straight points, trailing 11-3. In the closing moments of set two, the Warriors wouldn't go down without a fight as they scored four straight points bringing the score to 23-15. The late run wasn't enough and the set was lost 25-15.
In the third and final set, the Warriors were down 1-8 but would stay the course and continue to fight till the end. As the set continued on, the Warriors went on a huge run, outscoring the Mustangs 11-3, and Jessup only trailed by two, 20-18. Despite the sudden change in momentum, the Warriors were unable to claim the set and lost 25-19.
Brianne Whitt continued to find her teammates as she finished with 13 assists and
Madison Pelham recorded 12 of her own.
Michaela Zapata led the Warriors with 8 kills and close behind was
Vendela Williams with 7.
Taylor Jacky closed out the night with 15 digs and
Alicia Borges tallied two more aces from the service line.
Despite the tough loss, coach Millhollin said, "We know that our hard work and grit will pay off in the end."
The Warriors will have a short break before hitting the road again for a conference bout with the Menlo Oaks on October 2nd at 7 PM.
