ROCKLIN, CALIF— Following a road trip to Southern California, the William Jessup Volleyball team returned to their home floor in dominant fashion as they defeated the San Diego Christian Hawks in straight sets, 32-30, 25-12, & 25-15.
The Warriors had a tremendous start to the first set as they lead 17-10 early on. Despite the solid start, the Hawks were quick to fly up the scoreboard as they rallied and tied the set at 20 apiece.
After breaking the tie, the Warriors appeared primed to fend off the run and end the set as they retook the lead, 24-21, but the Hawks snagged the next four points to take the lead themselves, 25-24. This wild set would endure five more ties until a block from
Taylor Tarble followed by a kill from
Hannah Henriksen gave Jessup the win, 32-30.
Throughout the mayhem,
Vendela Williams was able to provide stellar play along with a calming presence to her team in a chaotic situation. After the game, she said in regards to the first set that, "Going into extra points was crazy!" She added that keeping her focus on the task at hand was what helped her keep her composure on the floor. Williams ended by noting, "Being in intense situations and coming out on top like that are the best parts of the game."
Following the chaos that was set one, the Warriors came out on fire in the second frame as they led 6-0 to start things off. They would reach their largest lead in the set on its final point as
Taylor Jacky recorded an ace to give her squad the 25-12 win.
At the start of the third set, the Warriors were caught playing from behind as they trailed 6-4 but as
Alicia Borges stepped to the service line things changed in a hurry. The Warriors were able to score 10 consecutive points as they took a commanding 14-6 lead.
In regards to helping provide a boost for her team to rally behind, Borges said "I knew I had to get the job done for my team. They needed me to do my job and that's what drove me."
The momentum from the scoring run would help propel Jessup to complete the sweep by winning 25-15 while notching their fifth conference win this season.
Vendela Williams along with
Taylor Jacky led the Warriors in kills with 12 each and
Hannah Henriksen finished with 9.
Jessica Williams had a team-high 22 assists and
Brianne Whitt recorded 15 of her own while
Kacey Berger and Jacky were tops on the team with 13 digs each.
After the game, head coach
Tiger Shelton gave props to being back in Warrior Arena, saying, "It's exciting to play in front of your home crowd" while also adding, "That was a good game for us to get back to what we do. Hopefully tomorrow we come out and do the same thing."
It will be a quick turnaround as the Warriors will host Vanguard University Saturday afternoon at 1 PM in Warrior Arena.
