Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Quinton Lilley

Slow start downs the Warriors at San Diego Christian

EL CAJON, Calif. - The Jessup women's soccer team ended their two-match Southern California road trip at San Diego Christian, however, a slow start proved to be the difference as the Warriors lost 3-0 Saturday afternoon.

Warriors coach Rachel Moorehead said while the loss was difficult to accept, there were positives the team can take away from the experience. "This was a very disappointing result for us. It's difficult to start the game with a penalty kick on a handball but the girls did battle back the rest of the first half with some good offensive possessions."

The match seemed to immediately tip in the home teams favor after a handball was called on the Warriors (2-10, GSAC 0-3) inside the goalie box and ultimately led to the Hawks' first goal just 49 seconds in.

Jessup then traded offensive attacks with SDCC as Alexia De La Paz and Skie Mayo each had shots in the ninth and 22nd minutes.

Then the Hawks grabbed the momentum back in the 25th minute with a shot followed by another goal in the 29th minute to take a 2-0 lead. SDCC tried to extend their lead even further with shots in the 40th and 41st minutes but Jessup goalkeeper Camille Cavey saved both attempts as the score remained at 2-0 by halftime.

In the second half, the Warriors backline was pressured early and often as the Hawks had four corner kicks and a shot on goal by the 70th minute.

Mayo did have another scoring opportunity in the 60th minute but the shot was saved by the Hawks' goalie.

Then in the 72nd minute SDCC added an insurance goal to push the lead to 3-0 as the home team took the win.

Moorehead said her team will need to improve its' ability to play from behind in order to improve its win total going forward. "We didn't come out in the second half with enough urgency to close the gap being down by two goals. Once your down at the half, you have to be willing to take risks to get back into it."

Jessup returns home with two matches starting Thursday when they host Arizona Christian at 4 p.m.
