Second half comeback sparks Warriors 2-1 win over ACU

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The Jessup women's soccer team used a two-goal second-half comeback to grab their first conference win 2-1 over Arizona Christian Thursday afternoon.

In most of the Warriors' (3-10, GSAC 1-3) losses this season the team has given up the first goal of the match and not been able to recover, however, Jessup showed great resolve Thursday and coach Rachel Moorehead said the effort didn't go unnoticed. "Today was a great come from behind win for us. We've struggled all year with going down early and not being able to come back but the girls proved to themselves what they are capable of."

The match opened with ACU immediately taking offensive control as the Firestorm had three shots in the opening five minutes. Then in the eighth minute, ACU scored to take a 1-0 lead.

ACU continued their offensive attack in the final 15 minutes of the first half as they racked up five shots, but Jessup goalkeeper Camille Cavey helped keep the deficit to just one.

In the second half, the Warriors quickly grabbed the momentum as Abigail House scored in the 46th minute on a cross from Alexia De La Paz. Then in the 52nd minute, De La Paz scored on her own to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead.

With ACU trailing they put four more shots on goal by the 70th minute however none of the found the back of the net. House and De La Paz both attempted to extend Jessup's lead in the 74th and 75th minutes but the Firestorm defense was up to the task.

In the final 10 minutes of play, Madison Leonhardt and Katie Worley also tried to extend the lead however neither shot scored.

Then in the 89th minute, ACU earned a free-kick just outside the Jessup goalie box but Cavey made her ninth save of the day to help Jessup take home the victory.

Moorehead noted that the key factor in the comeback effort was a change of mindset. "The girls' intensity and collective effort created a change of momentum from the first half to the second which allowed us to put ACU under constant pressure. We plan to build off of this win going forward the rest of the season."

Jessup continues conference play Saturday when they'll host OUAZ at 10 a.m.
