Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Quinton Lilley

Warriors' fast start earns 3-1 win over ACU

ROCKLIN, Calif. - After going 1-1 on the road last week, the Jessup men's soccer team returned home and played arguably their best match of the season earning a 3-1 victor over Arizona Christian Thursday afternoon.

The Warriors had their fair share of slow starts earlier in the season, however, the home team (4-8-1, GSAC 2-2) got off to a blazing start and coach Greg Lazaga said his team's positive play was evident from the opening minute. "Our group was great today and I couldn't be prouder of them. We made quite a few tactical changes that were specific for this opponent and I thought we were able to execute really well."

The match began with Arizona Christian on the attack as they earned three corner kicks in the opening two minutes. However, the Warriors defense stood tough keeping the score tied at zero.

Then in the fourth minute, Jessup counter attacked as Josh Freeman got his first shot on goal. Then after an ACU turnover, Karam Idris found Paul Anderson for the Warriors' first goal in the ninth minute taking a 1-0 lead.

ACU looked to respond offensively with another three shots and a corner kick over the next 10 minutes but Jessup's pressure defense limited the Firestorm's effectiveness. "

The rotation of players up top put a lot of pressure on Arizona Christian's offense. They are a talented group, so it was important for us to get pressure on their backline," Lazaga said.

The consistent Warrior pressure paid off again in the 25th minute as Freeman scored his third goal of the season on an assist from Idris giving Jessup a 2-0 lead.

After trailing 2-0, ACU looked to mount a comeback effort as they put five shots on goal in the final 24 minutes of the half however goalkeeper Robert Sams was up to the task as he saved one of the shots while the other four were off the mark.

At halftime, Jessup held a two-goal lead.

The second half began similar to the first as both teams traded offensive attacks with ACU racking up four shots and Jessup countered with three by the 57th minute.

Later, Karam Idris became the focal point of Jessup's offense as he had shots in the 64th and 70th minute. Then in the 71st minute, Idris found the back of the net giving Jessup a 3-0 lead.

While ACU was able to score in the 88th minute, Jessup went on to claim their second conference win of the season 3-1.

On the day Anderson added his fourth goal of the season, Freeman now has goals in back to back matches and Idris had a stellar day with a goal and two assists. Defensively, Jessup also got seven saves from Sams.

"We've seen our group do well in moments, now it is about replicating those moments into a series of games," Lazaga said.

Jessup will have a great chance to replicate Thursday's result when they host OUAZ Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m.
