Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Quinton Lilley

Warriors score late to earn 1-1 tie in 2OT

ROCKLIN, Calif. - After a resounding 3-1 victory on Thursday, the Jessup men's soccer team had another tough battle on their hands as they scored a goal in the final five minutes of regulation then held OUAZ scoreless to earn a 1-1 draw in double-overtime.

While the Warriors had their fair share of chances to win the match, coach Greg Lazaga said his team's execution and aggressive play were key while facing one of the GSAC's best teams.

"Today was a great game from our group. Ottawa is a very talented squad with strong and physical players in multiple spots. I thought we responded well to their style of play with a lot of dynamic and dangerous counter-attacks right back at them."

From the outset, both teams seemed evenly matched as each had two shots in the opening eight minutes of play. The match was also extremely physical as multiple fouls and yellow cards were given to both sides.

Jessup's first scoring opportunity came in the ninth minute when Paul Anderson's shot was saved by the OUAZ goalie. Anderson also had a header that missed just wide in the 13th minute as well.

OUAZ responded with three shots of their own in the 20th, 24th, and 25th minutes but Jessup goalkeeper Robert Sams saved two shots with the other one being off-target.

In the final 12 minutes of the first half, the Warriors dominated offensive possession as they had six shots including two from Alvaro Ascencio while Brennen Chanty, Karam Idris, Bogdan Ponomar, and James Ramos each had a shot apiece.

Going to into the break the game remained scoreless.

Ramos and Idris opened the second half for the Warriors with shots that couldn't get past the Spirit goalie. Then after back-to-back shots were blocked by Sams, OUAZ would take the lead scoring the first goal of the game in the 53rd minute.

From there OUAZ took the momentum keeping Jessup on the defensive end outshooting them 7-2 through the 84th minute.

Then in the 85th, Tanner Federico subbed in and made the biggest play of the match scoring the equalizer on an assist from Anderson.

With the match tied at one, Sams added another save in the 87th minute and Josh Freeman missed a shot on the other end in the 89th minute as the match went to overtime.

In the first overtime period, the Warriors were constantly on the attack with four shots in the to OUAZ's one. Idris had two great chances in consecutive possessions however neither found the back of the net.

In the second overtime period, Jessup again outshot OUAZ this time three to none, but the Warriors couldn't score another goal as the match ended in a tie.

On the day, Sams had another strong performance with seven saves playing all 110 minutes.

While a tie isn't the result Lazaga thought his team would end with, he said he was pleased with his team performance. "For several plays, late in regulation and in overtime I thought we were walking off the field with a win but just couldn't finish. I loved our effort and intensity from the entire group. If we play like that consistently we can compete with anyone."

Jessup will be on the road this Wednesday as they'll travel to face Menlo at 3:30 p.m.
