Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Quinton Lilley

Warriors' early lead not enough in 3-1 loss to OUAZ.

ROCKLIN, Calif - Just two days after the Jessup women's soccer team erased a second-half deficit to grab a huge come-from-behind win, the Warriors were unable to repeat that effort as OUAZ erased the Warriors 1-0 lead in the second half to take home the victory Saturday morning.

While the loss wasn't what Jessup was hoping for, coach Rachel Moorehead said the match proved her team can compete with anyone. " Today's match was a great showing of our capabilities. Being able to score early gave us the confidence to hold off a very talented OUAZ squad. Unfortunately, we struggled to maintain that momentum in the second half."

The Warriors (3-11, GSAC 1-4) were facing their second undefeated conference team in three weeks but their offense got off to a blazing start as Alexia De La Paz assisted Alhan Bakideh on a goal in the fifth minute giving Jessup the 1-0 lead.

Then OUAZ countered with shots in the ninth, 17th, 18th, and 32nd minute. However, Jessup's defense held on to their slim lead. Then after the Warriors held possession for most of the following four minutes the Spirit earned two corner kicks and three shots in a 10-minute span just before halftime. Nonetheless, Warriors' goalkeeper Camille Cavey was up to the task as she had two saves and a block to keep Jessup in front.

At halftime Jessup still led 1-0.

Then just two minutes into the second half OUAZ scored to tie things at 1 apiece. But the Spirit weren't done as they continued their offensive attack with shots in the 47th and  49th minutes.

Jessup attempted to regain the lead on their own offensive possession as Vanessa Alonzo had a shot in the 52nd minute, but the OUAZ goalkeeper was there for the save.

In the 55th minute OUAZ regained the momentum as they had shots in the 55th (2), 56th, and 66th minutes before finally scoring in the 67th minute to take a 2-1 lead.

After another near score by OUAZ in the 70th minute, the Spirit scored the match's final goal in the 72nd minute giving them the two-goal advantage.

In the final 18 minutes of action, Jessup added two more shots to their tally but neither of them found the back of the net as OUAZ took the win.

While the team's second-half didn't result in another comeback win, Moorehead said she was pleased with her team's effort even after falling behind. "I'm proud of the fight they displayed today but to compete in this conference we have to string two 45 minute halves together."

The team will have a chance to do that Wednesday when they'll travel to face GSAC rival Menlo at 1 p.m.
