Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Quinton Lilley

Warriors drop conference match 2-0 at Menlo

ATHERTON, Calif. - The Jessup women's soccer team had a valiant effort on the road at Menlo but after a slow start fell 2-0 Wednesday afternoon.

Warriors' coach Rachel Moorehead said, her team executed pretty well but had struggles finishing off good scoring opportunities. "We did a good job of staying with our game plan and producing more chances on frame but, as has been our struggle all year, we couldn't finish."

From the opening kick, Menlo grabbed the momentum as the Oaks had the first shot in the third minute then scored in the ninth minute.

Later in the half, Jessup (3-11, GSAC 1-4) counter-attacked with shots by Madison Leonhardt and Alhan Bakideh in the 12th and 18th minutes.

Jessup continued to attack as Lashaa Robinzine checked-in and had her first shot of the match in the 36th minute followed by shots from Marriah Gishwiller in the 40th and 44th minute.

While the Warriors trailed at the half 1-0, they faired well from an attacking standpoint after earning six shots in the opening half while Menlo had eight.

In the second half, Menlo regained the offensive momentum, as the Oaks had three shots in the opening five minutes of play. However, the Jessup defense held up as goalkeeper Camille Cavey two of the shots and the others went high.

In the 50th minute, Jessup adjusted to the Oaks offensive scheme and had a strong offensive push of their own as Vanessa Alonzo had a shot in the 53rd minute, then the Warriors earned back-to-back corner kicks in the 57th minute and Bakideh had another shot in the 59th minute.

However, the Oaks defense didn't allow a score during that phase as they held on to their 1-0 lead.

After facing an offensive push from Jessup, Menlo had another counter-attack in the 63rd minute as they had five shots and two corner kicks over the following 10 minutes of play.

Then in the 74th minute, Menlo scored an insurance goal to take a 2-0 lead as the Warriors didn't find another shot the rest of the match.

Moorehead said it was the little things that ultimately led to the defeat, "Today came down to minor details. We had a lot of opportunities on goal that we didn't finish and unfortunately Menlo took advantage of their chances."

Jessup will look to bounce back as they return to the field at home Saturday for Senior Day against Hope International at 1:30 p.m.
