Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Quinton Lilley

Milan leads Jessup to home-opening win

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The Jessup men's basketball team got off to a strong start winning their season opener 82-71 over Pacific Union Tuesday night.

Senior point guard Isaiah Milan scored a career-high 28 points as he helped lead the Warriors to their fourth-consecutive win over the Pioneers.

Jessup coach Lance Von Vogt said that while he's happy to get the win, his team has some things to clean up before conference play. "We have a lot to build on, but also a lot to iron out. We had too many careless turnovers tonight and they carved us up on the dribble drive. We have to improve in both of those areas if we are going to reach our potential this season."

Tuesday's game began rather slowly for the Warriors' offense as PUC took an early 10-4 lead. However, the Warriors responded nicely with a three from Jaydon Clark and a pull-up jumper from Jaylen Johnson to stem the tide.

Later in the half, Milan got into an offensive rhythm with a 4-0 run of his own with back-to-back layups as the Warriors cut PUC's lead to 21-17. Then after Erik Kinnebrew came off the bench to hit a three, Milan scored on another driving layup and Jessup grabbed its' first lead of the game at 22-21 with 6:28 left in the first half.

The first half ended with both teams trading baskets as Jessup held a 37-36 lead.

Von Vogt said after the game that he wasn't surprised by how well the Pioneers played in the first 20 minutes. "PUC always gives us a great game to start the season and test us in a lot of different ways."

After going 0-3 from beyond the arc in the first half, Jessup senior Luis Medaris hit a three to open the second half then scored on a coast-to-coast layup. Milan capped off the 7-2 scoring run with a layup plus the foul as Jessup took a 45-38 lead with 16:57 left.

However, PUC battled back over the next four minutes as they cut Jessup's lead to 49-47 at the 13:39 mark.

Nonetheless, the Warriors had their own response with scores from Milan, Jayden DeJoseph, and Johnson as the trio combined for nine quick points giving Jessup their first double-digit lead of the game at 62-51 with 10 minutes remaining.

The remainder of the game Jessup held on to their double-digit advantage until the three-minute mark when PUC had a 4-0 run cutting Jessup's lead to seven. However, that's as close as the Pioneers would get and Jessup took home the win by 11.

Johnson had a strong game himself scoring 15 points off the bench on 7-10 shooting and grabbed four rebounds. DeJoseph  also had a solid game scoring nine points, and freshman Sam Howlin nearly had a double-double in his first collegiate game with eight points and 12 rebounds. In additon to his career night, Milan also added a team-high five assists. As a team the Warriors shot 47 percent from the field, and 76 percent from the free throw line.

Von Vogt also said the play of Milan, Howlin, and Johnson was a great sign of things to come. "Isaiah played a complete game tonight, I thought Sam did a great job in his first-ever collegiate game and Jaylen really gave us great energy off the bench."

The Warriors will be back on the court Monday when they'll host New Hope Christian at 7:30 p.m.
