Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Quinton Lilley

De La Paz scores on Senior Day

ROCKLIN, Calif - After honoring nine seniors on Senior Day for their final home match, the Jessup women's soccer team grabbed an early 1-0 lead but were unable to hold on as they lost 5-1 to Hope International Saturday afternoon.

While the match's result wasn't what coach Rachel Moorehead had hoped for she said her team played well for many parts of the game. "We played a much better game than was reflected on the scoreboard. We made some minor errors and Hope seemed to capitalize on all of them in the 2nd half."

The match began as a defensive battle with neither team earning a shot in the first seven minutes, but in the eighth minute, Hope put the first ball on frame followed by another shot in the 11th minute.

Alhan Bakideh came off the bench in the 11th minute and put her own shot on goal in the 13th  but missed wide right.

After shots from HIU in the 19th and 22nd minutes, Bakideh was fouled in the penalty box and senior Alexia De La Paz scored on the penalty kick in the 24th minute giving Jessup a 1-0 advantage something Moorehead said she felt was a special moment for her senior class.

"It was not the game we had planned for but having one of our seniors, be able to bury a PK today was a great victory," Moorehead said.

From that point, HIU took the momentum as they had shots in the 29th and 32nd minutes before finally equalizing the match in the 36th.

At the half, both teams found themselves tied as the final 45 minutes would decide it.

In the second half, the Royals almost immediately took control of the pace as they had seven unanswered shots, however, the Jessup defense held up nicely as goalie Camille Cavey had two saves during the segment.

Then in the 69th minute, the Royals scored to take a 2-1 lead and four minutes later HIU scored an insurance goal grabbing a 3-1 lead and eventually took the win.

As the home matches came to a close this weekend for the 2019 squad, Moorehead said the thing that stuck with her about this group was their pride and class. "It was an excellent celebration of our senior class, as we got to have all nine start on the field for a kick off one last time. This class of women is one of high character and compassion, they will be greatly missed."

The seniors will have one final time to play with each other Saturday at Vanguard with kick-off set for 11 a.m.
