SURPRISE, Arizona— The William Jessup Volleyball team continued their terrific play, defeating the Ottawa Spirit in three sets, 25-22, 25-21, & 25-12, notching their fifth consecutive victory. The win puts the Warriors record at 12-9 overall and 9-5 in conference, tying the most conference wins in program history.
After giving up the first point of the opening set, the Warriors kicked it into high gear as they scored the next five points, taking a 5-1 advantage. Jessup held the lead for the majority of the set, however, the Spirit wouldn't go down without a fight, as the Warriors trailed 20-21 down the stretch. Eager for a comeback, the Warriors scored four of the final five points and it was
Madison Marlow who ended the set with an ace giving Jessup the 25-22 set win.
The start of the second set was closely contested as it was tied for the seventh time when the score reached 10-10. Once the Warriors broke the tie, there was no looking back as they held the lead until its conclusion, winning 25-21 with
Vendela Williams recording the final two points for Jessup with a pair of kills.
With two intense battles in the books, there was no stopping this unit as they dominated the third set. Upon allowing the opening two points, the Warriors reeled off six of the next eight points taking an early 6-4 lead. The two teams would trade the next several points but then the Warriors caught fire scoring five points in a row to go up 13-7. The red-hot Warriors couldn't be stopped and they would end the set and the match by scoring the final six points to win 25-12.
Vendela Williams led the way with 12 kills and
Taylor Jacky along with
Ashanti Grayer each finished with 7. From the service line, Jacky had a team-high 4 aces while
Madison Marlow and
Cassidy Maw each had a pair.
Taylor Tarble and
Brianne Whitt played a great defensive game finishing with 5 and 4 blocks respectively. Also on the defensive side, Jacky led with 10 digs,
Jessica Williams had 9 and
Kacey Berger ended with 8. Distributing the ball offensively was J. Williams leading with 22 assists and Whitt closing the match out with 12.
The win is the fifth consecutive for the team with the three most recent games coming all on the road. This group has been battle-tested time and time again and they have continued to be resilient. Head coach
Tiger Shelton was very pleased with the recent showing as he said, "It's been a great road trip picking up two wins to keep out win streak alive." He continued by saying, "We had some fantastic senior leadership that has been carrying us all year and we will look to them to help us finish strong.
These Road Warriors will return to Jessup for a pair of home games on November 1
st against Westmont College & the 2
nd against The Master's University followed by two more road games to wrap up the season.
