Warriors go down in five sets to Westmont

Jessup gave Westmont a stellar effort, but came up short in a five set battle

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF— Jessup volleyball finished their Southern California road trip with a match-up hosted by Westmont College. Despite coming away with back-to-back wins in the opening two sets, Jessup would lose the match in five sets, 25-22, 25-22, 10-25, 16-25, & 10-15. The loss puts the Warriors record at 7-9 and 4-5 in GSAC play.

Midway through the opening set, the Warriors trailed Westmont by four points, 11-15 but sophomore Ashanti Grayer recorded a kill that sparked a run for Jessup. The Warriors would not only go on to tie the set but once they regained the lead, they never looked back as they hung on to win, 25-22.

After closing out the first set in strong fashion, the Warriors were slow out of the gate in set two as they surrendered the opening four points to Westmont. Jessup would trail by as much as five points before tying the set up at 13 apiece. Once again the Warriors called on Grayer and she delivered as she came away with the sets final kill as Jessup won 25-22.

Again in set three, the Warriors fell behind early but this time around they were unable to rally back as they dropped the third set 10-25. They were able to improve in the fourth set, but the extra effort wasn't enough to overcome Westmont as Jessup lost 16-25. In the fifth and final set, the Warriors were able to hang around and keep the game close but would go on to lose, 10-15.

Grayer led Jessup with 11 kills and Vendela Williams tallied 8. Brianne Whitt was tops in assists with 16 while Jessica Williams recorded 14. Defensively, Alicia Borges had a team-high 17 digs and Kacey Berger closed the game out with 16. From the service line, freshman Madison Marlow led with three service aces as Borges and Berger each recorded one as well.

The Warriors will return home for their next matchup as GSAC play continues on as they'll host San Diego Christian on Friday, October 11 in Warrior Arena at 7 PM.
