Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Quinton Lilley

Second half struggles down the Warriors at UC Merced

MERCED, Calif. - In what turned out to be a back and forth affair between two undefeated teams, UC Merced outlasted Jessup to win 69-65 Monday night at home.

The Warriors (4-1) came into the game on a four-game win streak but had yet to play on the road against an NAIA foe until Monday night when a second-half push proved to be the difference.

Warriors coach Lance Von Vogt said a lack of focus and execution ultimately cost his team their undefeated record. "We played out of character and lacked discipline both offensively and defensively. Merced controlled the style, pace, and tempo of the game. And it's not often that we're out-toughed but tonight that's what happened."

The game began in Merced's (4-0) favor as they took a 9-4 lead after hitting their second 3-pointer of the night. However, Jessup responded nicely as Sam Howlin scored, then Erik Kinnebrew came off the bench to hit his first three of the night as Jessup tied the game at nine.

Later in the half, the Bobcats took their largest lead of the at seven points thanks to a 7-0 run capped off at the 12:22 mark. The Warriors then got some more production from their bench as Wilson LaShells and Jaydon Clark hit threes before Kinnebrew hit his second shot beyond the arc cutting the Merced lead to 19-18.

With 2:26 left in the first half, Jessup put together a 6-0 run sparked by Jourdan Johnson.  The senior transfer from Stanislaus State was seeing his first action of the year when he scored five unanswered points giving Jessup a six-point lead and by halftime, Jessup held a 34-30 advantage.

In the second half the Warriors got off to a good start as Howlin scored on a hook shot, then Isaiah Milan scored on a deep three-pointer pushing Jessup's lead back to seven at the 16:57 mark.

While the Bobcats tried to respond with a scoring run of their own the Warriors held on to a six-point lead with 15 minutes to go.

Then Merced tied things back up and later grabbed a five-point lead by the 9:28 mark.

With a minute left, Merced held a two-point lead when Kinnebrew was fouled and went to the free-throw line with a chance to tie the game, however, the junior missed the first and made the second cutting the deficit to one.

Free throws were also a key factor in the game as the Warrior's missed eight of their 13 attempts while Merced went 6-for-8, something Von Vogt said the Warriors will need to improve if they expect to win. " We aren't going to win many ball games when we shoot 38% from the free-throw line and have nine second-half turnovers. Defensively we lacked discipline and awareness something we have to improve quickly."

On the following Bobcat possession with 13 seconds to go, Merced hit another three extending the lead to four and took home the victory.

The Warriors offense was led by Kinnebrew who had 15 points and five rebounds. Following Kinnebrew in double-figure scoring was Howlin with 12 points and five rebounds and Milan added 10 points with a team-high nine rebounds and five assists.

The Warriors are off the next 10 days before they travel to Eugene Ore. to play Northwest Christian in the Beacon Classic. Two weeks ago the Warriors held on to beat NCU 80-77.

Von Vogt said the break will be a time his team uses to improve before they play in their first road tournament. "We have about a week and a half to get ourselves back in character before we play on the road vs NCU and Oregon Tech. We will watch the film and get better from here."
