DAVIS, Calif. - After building a four-game win streak over the first two weeks of the season the Warriors took their show on the road for an exhibition game at UC Davis. While the Warriors (4-0) had a competitive first 15 mins, they ultimately lost 109-63 Thursday evening.
Coach Lance Von Vogt said the exhibition game was good for his team to play some better competition so early in the year. "Tonight we ran into a hungry team that played very well. Coach Les is one of the best and tonight his team responded with a complete effort."
The Warriors fell behind to begin the game as they faced an 8-0 deficit but used some good outside shooting to close the gap to 13-11 with 14:04 left in the first half thanks to two threes from Erik Kinnebrew and another from Jaylen Johnson who both gave Jessup a spark off the bench.
From there the Warriors traded small runs with the Aggies as UCD held a 12-point lead after Jaydon Clark hit a three with 8:17 left in the half.
Austin Dill got his offense going with back to back baskets at the 5:46 mark cutting Davis' lead back to within single-digits. On the other end, Dill also played some good defense in the first half after freshman center Sam Howlin got into foul trouble.
Later in the half Jessup fought to get the lead down to 10 at the 2:19 mark, but the Aggies went on an 8-1 run taking a 49-32 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Davis extended their lead with a 10-3 run before Luis Medearis hit two free throws at the 16:38 mark putting the score at 59-36.
While the Warriors continued the fight the remainder of the game they wouldn't get any closer as the Aggies took home the victory.
The Warriors offense was led by Isaiah Milan who scored a team-high 18 points and four assists. Johnson also scored in double figures with 10 points.
Von Vogt also said, "Austin Dill really battled in there tonight which was good to see and Sam Howlin will really benefit from this experience. Overall there will be a lot of positives from tonight's game."
The Warriors are currently missing multiple players for various reasons but most of them are expected to return over the next month which Von Vogt says will help his team tremendously. "Our depth isn't where it needs to be right now especially on the interior and we had a few guys playing out of position which Davis took advantage of. We're looking forward to our roster growing as guys get healthy and we hit semester break. "
The Warriors record stays at 4-0 with this exhibition not counting toward their overall record and the team will return to the court Monday when they travel to UC Merced with tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
