Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Quinton Lilley

Johnson's three lifts Warriors to road win at Flagler College

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - After traveling nearly 2,900 miles across the country, the Jessup men's basketball team played their first of three games in Florida Monday afternoon as the Warriors stormed back in the final minutes beating NCAA D2 Flagler College on Jourdan Johnson's buzzer-beating three to win 77-74.

The Warriors (7-3, GSAC 1-1) who trailed nearly the entire game took only their second lead of the night with 90 seconds remaining and then got a perfectly executed corner three from the Castro Valley, Calif native to win the game.

Coach Lance Von Vogt who is a Florida native said the teams come from behind effort was something he's extremely proud of. "This was a fantastic team win. Flagler is an excellent team so we knew we would have to compete for 40 minutes to win this one. But to be back in my home state coaching for the first time in 17 years and to have my high school teammates, coaches, and family in attendance makes this even more special."

From the opening tip, the Warriors seemed to show no signs of jet lag as they took an early 7-3 lead thanks to a three from Johnson and four free throws from Oliver Amajoyi. Amajoyi, who was playing in his first action this season had a huge impact for the Warriors scoring 10 first-half points.

After the Warriors took the early lead Flagler responded with a 9-2 run giving the home team an 18-9 advantage with 12:53 remaining.

Later in the half, the Warriors cut Flagler's lead down to three at 28-25 with 7:11 left before FC used an 8-0 run to grab a 41-31 lead with 1:16 left and took a nine-point lead into the halftime break.

To open the second half, the Warriors got their offense into a solid rhythm scoring on a lay-in from Sam Howlin, a driving layup from Isaiah Milan, and back-to-back free throws from Luis Medearis capped a 6-2 run as Flagler led 47-43.

However, FC responded as they extended the lead back to 11 at the 9:34 mark. But after some cold outside shooting, Jayden DeJoseph hit Jessup's first back-to-back threes of the night and a Medearis lay-in cut Flagler's lead to just three at 61-58.

Then coming down the stretch, Medearis hit a three, Milan added another triple and then a lay-up plus the foul that gave Jessup their first lead in nearly 35 minutes of game time with1:31 left.

After a layup from FC tied the game at 74 all, Johnson found himself just a sliver of daylight in the corner hitting the shot as the buzzer sounded. It was Johnson's night as he scored a career-high 27 points on 10-for-15 shooting including a career-high 6-for-8 from three-point land.

Von Vogt also said Johnson's performance was very impressive. "Jourdan was sensational tonight, so it was only fitting that he hit the game-winner. I was proud of how our guys responded to each of Flagler's runs and also how we quickly moved on to the next play after every mistake."

Milan followed Johnson in double figures with 14, Medearis added 11, and Amajoyi rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10. As a team, the Warriors overcame their cold shooting slump where they shot just 33-percent in the first half, improving that number to 53-percent in the second half.

The Warriors will remain on the road in Florida Wednesday afternoon when they'll take on Spring Arbor University at 4 pm pacific time.
