SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The final doubleheader of the series over San Diego Christian got pushed to Sunday afternoon where the Warriors played from behind in each matchup taking the series 3-1 and advancing to 14-5, 8-4 on the season.
Head coach Trevor Paine said, "I'm glad we could end the series on a strong note. We started to gain some rhythm offensively and overcame a disappointing start to the series. At this point of the season we are used to games getting moved around so that wasn't much of an issue. We were thin on the bench so it was good to see guys like Dakota Spillers and Connor Franco provide big contributions when their names were called."
In game one, the score would remain 2-1 with the Hawks ahead through the fifth inning,
Josh Duitsman with the lone run with a solo shot to right field. But in the sixth inning, the bats would come alive for the Warriors as
Kawaiola Takemura would bring in the tying run, followed by
Anders Green and
Dakota Spillers to take the 4-2 advantage.
It didn't stop there as Jessup continued to post multiple runs in the remaining innings with 3 in the seventh and two in both the eighth and ninth inning. Offensively the Warriors had 19 hits in the 11-4 victory, the second most hits the Warriors have posted this season.
Duitsman led the Warriors in game one and two, starting the day going 4-for-6 against the Hawks with a home run, double and two RBI's. Takemura followed going 3-for-6 with 3 RBI's. Staring for the Warriors on the bump and collecting his third win of the season was
Micah Gunter with three strikeouts in his five-inning appearance.
In game two the Hawks would yet again jump ahead in the first inning with a pair of runs, but by the second inning they would even the score as they walked in a run and Takemura, yet again, brought in the tying run.
A solo run would cross for San Diego Christian in the following frame, but the Warriors put together another late offensive performance posting two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead, and another seven runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.
The Hawk would make a late run in the final frame of the game but would come up short as
Grant Doi closed the game for the Warriors defeating SDCC 12-9. Picking up the win was reliever
Brett Wetteland collecting his second win on the season in his .2 innings pitched with one strikeout.
Duitsman would continue his offensive force going 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, followed by
Cal Koga (2-3) and
Jordan Williams (2-4) with 2RBI's.
"We have been waiting for the offense to string some good performances together and the last three games were more what we are accustomed to seeing," Paine commented. "This group has a chance to be a very dangerous offensively and the the last three games were a step in the right directions. When Duitsman is seeing the ball well he has the ability to carry the offense and that's what he did today. He took fantastic swings all day."
The Warriors will continue on the road next week as they take on Arizona Christian next Friday and Saturday in Phoenix.
