SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Jessup men's basketball took their home court for the final time this season in the final game of the GSAC Conference Tournament, the highest opportunity of the season. The Warriors faced No. 1 seed, The Master's and after back-to-back-to-back games in the same number of days, the Mustangs would go on to claim their third GSAC Tournament Title.
"We ran out of gas tonight and I thought Master's played extremely well," head coach
Lance Von Vogt commented on his Warrior's team first appearance in the conference championship. "This result definitely does not diminish what this team has accomplished so far this season."Â Â
Down by 5 at the start, the Warriors would battle their way back and take their first lead of the game at the 16-minute mark (9-7), but it wouldn't stay long as the Mustangs went on a 9-0 run to take back the lead and momentum.
Later in the opening half, Jessup would chip away at the Mustang's lead and take the reigns with a clutch three-pointer by junior
Isaiah Milan for the 32-31 advantage. Nevertheless, the regular-season champions earned it back taking the 43-36 lead into halftime.
Unlike the Mustangs, the Warriors were competing in their third game in the same number of days, while the No. 1 seed TMU had the bye coming into the quarterfinals. A strong start to the second quarter would set a precedence for the Mustangs as they leaped to a double-digit lead and took it to the final buzzer to defeat the warriors 89-74.
Leading the Warriors for his final time on Horton Court was
Keith Phillips who finished with 19 points and 8 rebounds. He was joined by his teammates,
Antonio Lewis with 14 points, Milan (13) and
Tyras Rattler Jr. (10).
Currently ranked No. 19 in the country and knocking off the Vanguard Lions in the semifinals, the Warriors will await their fate for the NAIA Men's Basketball National Tournament announced on Wednesday at 3 pm. The 32-team field will take their talents to Kansas City, Mo. March 20-26th.
Â
"We are looking forward to nationals and gearing up for a run there," Von Vogt concluded. "This is a special group of guys."
