KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Jessup men's basketball team headed to the National Tournament already with a record-breaking season under their belt, making their second NAIA DI Men's Basketball Tournament in five seasons under the leadership of
Lance Von Vogt. Despite a first-half lead, LSU Shreveport came out hot in the second half taking the lead and victory, 83-65.
"It's always hard when a season comes to an end, but this group of men has answered the bell to every challenge all season long," Von Vogt stated. "Shreveport did a fantastic job in their matchup zone tonight and it never allowed us to get a great rhythm offensively. We were just making the best of what we had but it was disjointed throughout."
Even matched from the tip, the Warriors and Pilots exchanged leads throughout the first half, a tie game with 6:08 remaining before the Warrior went on a run to hold the slight edge at the break, 32-29. Junior
Brandon Lindsey would lead the Warriors with 11 points, followed by
Keith Phillips with 8.
To start the final half, the Pilots would tie it up less than two minutes and take the final lead of the game on a 6-0 run. The Warriors would continue to battle to the final 5 minutes of regulation, but an unanswered 16-0 run by LSU Shreveport would move them on to the round of 16 on Friday, ending the Warriors season.
"We had the two steals with about 5 minutes to play with opportunities to tie or take the lead," Von Vogt went on to say, "but to come up empty and they go down to other end and score were more than we could overcome at the end."Â
Leading the Warriors offensively was GSAC Player of the Year Phillips with his final double-double in the royal and white, 18 points and 12 rebounds. Also in double figures was Lindsey with 13 points.
It was a record-breaking season for the Warriors as they clinched 23 wins, the most in program history and scored the most points in a season as well.Â
Coach is proud of his team for overcoming so many obstacles from the beginning to the final week of the season, "From the start of the season when we lost Kevin and how this team came together to put together this historic season is evidence of the character and integrity of these guys."
