Swift and Law homer in opening round 11-2 win over Westmont

Homers from Law and Swift lead to blowout win in GSAC tourney

IRVINE, Calif. -- After two game time delays spanning just over 15 hours, the Jessup baseball team dominated Westmont in their opening round matchup 11-2 in the GSAC conference tournament.

Westmont came into  Tuesday's game after winning a 16-15 12 inning thriller that lasted nearly five hours of gameplay on Monday afternoon.

However, on Tuesday Westmont's offense was stifled most of the day. Westmont grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the second inning before the Warriors quickly responded tying the score thanks to a throwing error on an Anders Green ground ball that scored Joe Starick.

The Warriors took their first lead of the game in the following frame when Noah Shackles singled to left field helping Kupono Decker score.

But Westmont wasn't done committing miscues when Kawaiola Takemura scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning extending the Warriors lead to 4-1.

Then the game-changing moment came in the seventh inning when Will Law hit a grand slam to right field putting the game effectively out of reach at 8-1.

Then in the eighth inning with two outs, Austen Swift hit a 3-run insurance homer that gave the Warriors 11 runs on the day. That now marks the third consecutive game Jessup has scored 10 or more runs.

Law led the charge today at the plate with three hits and four RBIs and a run scored, including his grand slam homer and a walk. Swift also had a nice day with a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored.

On the mound Grant St. Martin had another solid day with six innings pitched allowing just four hits and one run allowed. He also tallied four strikeouts while giving up one walk.

The Warriors have now beaten Westmont in three of their five meetings this season.

The squad will return to the field tonight at 6 p.m. for their second-round matchup against Hope International.
