Cossentine makes Jessup history with 1st place finish; Southwood finishes in top 25

GULF SHORES, Ala. - For William Jessup distance runner Bailey Cossentine to get back on the track just 13 months after having a baby is a huge accomplishment on its' own. But for the Colfax, Calif. native that was simply the tip of the iceberg when it came to tapping into her full potential.

On Saturday morning, Cossentine made school history as she became the first ever, first place NAIA All-American as she ran a personal and school record 3:07.50.64 in the marathon.

Not only did Cossentine accomplish the feat after having her first child in early 2018, but she shaved over 30 minutes off her previous best time when she ran a 3:38:09.70 at the 2017 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Nationals finishing 19th.

Coach Jeff Magley lauded Cossentine's performance as she made all the right moves at the right times.

"Bailey executed a perfect race plan with her progression through the field of competitors. She was in control all day and closed the last 10k with great competitive heart and flawless execution," Magley said.

With her strong finish to the 2019 season as just a junior, Cossentine will look to defend her crown next season while also trying to break her own record.

On the men's side, Tyler Southwood ended his junior season on a high note as he finished 25th in the men's marathon, with a time of 2:57.18.48. This was Southwood's second-consecutive trip to Gulf Shores, after finishing 12th in 2018.

While Southwood slightly regressed this season at nationals compared to 2018, Magley said he was pleased with his perseverance and finishing speed at the end of the race.

"Tyler had a rough go physically in miles 21-24 but was able to mentally reengage the last 2 miles and had a closing two miles to finish in the top 25," Magley said.

The Warrior women represented especially well this weekend as they tallied 12 total points at the Outdoor Nationals to solidify a Top-25 finish among the over 60 teams competing at the final site.

"Overall today was a great day for Jessup track and field, as well as our university to have a National Champion. Jessup couldn't ask for a better representative than Bailey. She is the consummate student-athlete & today proved herself a deserving National Champion," Magley said.
