Leonhardt and Bakideh tally hat tricks in season opener

Balanced scoring helped Jessup overwhelm Cal Maritime in their season opening match.

VALLEJO, Calif. - The 2019 season couldn't have gotten off to a better start for the Jessup women's soccer team than it did on Saturday morning as the Warriors took a dominant 16-0 road victory at Cal Maritime.

The Warriors provided plenty of offense for the fans who traveled to Vallejo as junior forward Alhan Bakideh and Madison Leonhardt each tallied hat tricks, while Leonhardt also tied teammate Alexia De La Paz for a game-high 3 assists.

Head coach Rachel Moorehead said she was pleased with her team's effort. "Today was an excellent start to our 2019 season. We were able to put up very convincing numbers, distributing goals amongst 12 different players."

Bakideh opened things up for the Warriors in the opening 9-minutes as she scored on a ball delivered by Elena Marino. Later Leonhardt joined the action scoring her first goal off an assist from Bakideh in the 16th minute.

However, the Warriors weren't done yet as Maddy Rojas scored her first goal of the year just four minutes later on a beautiful assist by De La Paz. The Warriors' effective passing proved to be a difference in the match as only one of their goals was unassisted.

The Jessup attack kept constant pressure on Maritime all match long as they tallied 56 shots with 43 of them being on goal, something Moorehead said she was happy to see. "Overall, we are very proud of our girls as they have worked incredibly hard these past two weeks in preparation for the season and it appears to be paying off."

Late in the first half, the Warriors continued to capitalize on scoring opportunities as Katie Worley scored in the 26th minute, Leonhardt added another goal in the 34th minute and Natalia Seuthe scored her first goal in Warrior uniform just two minutes later.

At the half, the Warriors led 7-0,  however, the heat kept coming from Jessup as Bakideh started the second half just as she did the first, scoring in the first 53 seconds.

Twin sisters Isabel and Abigail House had a strong second half as each scored goals off of headers assists from De La Paz as well.

While the Warriors' dominating win was a welcomed sight, Moorehead said her team will be looking to build upon their strong start to 2019.

"Going forward we will continue working on our attack out of the back, creativity in front of the net, and maintaining clean sheets. There's a lot we want to accomplish and we are confident in this group that we will be meeting all of our goals."

The Warriors return to action in their home opener Thursday, Aug. 29 when they play host to University of the Antelope Valley at 3 pm.
