Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Quinton Lilley

Warriors' defense plays well in home opener

54 minutes of scoreless play was a positive sign for Jessup before falling 2-0 at home Thursday afternoon.

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The Jessup women's soccer team played just over 54 minutes of stellar defense, but a short four-minute burst by University of Antelope Valley proved to be the difference as the Warriors fell 2-0 in their home opener Thursday afternoon.

Coach Rachel Moorehead said she was pleased with her team's first-half defense, but also noted the second half is where her team made a few key mistakes.

"Today's game allowed us to see the gaps in our play, especially in our mentality. Defensively we played well, but UAV capitalized on our errors."

The opening half was a stingy defensive battle with each team having little to no scoring opportunities as both teams combined for just four shots and five corner kicks.

In the second half, UAV quickly grabbed control as they scored at the 54 and 60-minute marks creating a 2-0 lead.

The Warriors continued to fight defensively led by goalkeeper Camille Cavey as she tallied seven saves on the day.

In the final 15 minutes, the Warriors had their two best opportunities to score on an Elena Marino corner kick that sailed past her intended teammate, and a shot missed wide right by Alhan Bakideh. The Warriors went on to finish the match with two shots and two corner kicks.

While the Warriors confidence hasn't wavered, believing they have what it takes to grab plenty of wins going forward, Moorehead said some slight adjustments will be needed mentally.

"We know our team is physically capable of competing at a much higher level but we need to be more physically dominant, battle with a little more grit, and have a deeper belief in our abilities." Moorehead continued, "I am fully confident this team is capable of much greater play than what we produced today. We have a great opportunity to bounce back against the runner up of the Cal Pac Conference on Saturday."

The Warriors will get back on the field Saturday afternoon when they'll host UC Merced at 1:30 pm. The Bobcats come to Jessup with a 0-1 record after falling 2-0 against GSAC rival Menlo last Saturday.
