Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Quinton Lilley

Warriors’ defense continues to shine

Women's soccer plays well in late game loss to UC Merced

ROCKLIN, Calif. - In what turned out to be an all-out defensive battle, the women's soccer team held their opponent to 74-minutes of scoreless action on Saturday against UC Merced, but a game-winning goal in the final 15 minutes of play would favor the Bobcats for the 1-0 victory.

While Warrior's coach Rachel Moorehead said the loss was a hard pill to swallow, she was impressed by the resolve of her team. "Losing 1-0 with only a few minutes left on the clock is a tough way to end. But, the improvements we saw in our players, individually and as a team, were huge."

On the day the Warriors had seven shots with two on goal, compared to UC Merced with 17 total shots and seven on goal. Camille Cavey had another strong day with five saves, as her week ended with 12 total in two matches.

Moorehead said with the addition of 13 new players the chemistry factor will take some time after only practicing together less than a month, but that she's confident her team will find it's stride by the time GSAC matches begin.

"Having this many new additions, it's going to take time to come together but this team is on the right road. They are constantly impressing us with their maturity, ability to reflect, and adjust."

The Warriors will be looking to bounce back with a win next Sunday at 11 am as they'll take their only out of state trip to Klamath Falls, Ore. to take on the Oregon Tech Owls.

"We have a tough preseason to prep us for the immense competition of the GSAC, and games like these only push us in the direction of success," Moorehead said.
