Women's soccer grabs road win at Simpson

REDDING, Calif. - The Jessup women's soccer team got a 2-1 win Thursday afternoon at Simpson (Calif.) thanks to a strong offensive start in the first half and solid defense in the second.

The Warriors (2-3) took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute on a goal from Madison Rojas and Jessup continued to control the pace as they allowed minimal offensive opportunities to Simpson (2-2).

Head coach Rachel Moorehead said the improved play was good to see. "Road wins are always difficult to come by so we were happy to get the result we wanted."

At the half, the Warriors held a 1-0 lead and looked to stay on the attack in the 2nd half as their spacing and solid passing led to a goal from Abigail House in the 56th minute.

However, just three minutes later the Red Hawks got on the board with a goal of their own cutting Jessup's lead to 2-1.

Most of the day, the Warriors held a strong backline and kept good offensive pressure on the Red Hawks, something Moorehead previously mentioned her team would need to be successful this season.

"We have struggled to put the ball in the back of the net in our past few contests so to have Rojas and House put two away was a great feeling," Moorehead said.

The Warriors outshot Simpson 23-10 and had 11 shots on goal as well.

In the final 28 minutes, both teams combined for eight shots as they closed out the match, however, none of them found the net and the Warriors took the 2-1 victory.

While Moorehead said there is still room for improvement, she also added that her team is on the right path. "We still have a lot of progress to make before we're ready for conference play but we are well on our way."

The Warriors have six days off before they return to Jessup Field Wednesday when they host Academy of Art at 1 p.m.
