Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Quinton Lilley

Warriors take down Simpson 4-3

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The Jessup men's soccer team grabbed a win in dramatic fashion as they outlasted Simpson in an offensive thriller 4-3 at home Thursday afternoon.

The Warriors (1-5-1) got off to a slow start finding themselves behind 2-0 but showed some impressive effort as they erased the 2-goal deficit before the first half expired. The second-half thriller would end as Karam Idris scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute on a beautiful shot just over the goalkeeper.

Head coach Greg Lazaga said his team's slow start was due to a lack of accurate passing that led to some unforced errors. "The connections for us in the first 20 minutes were off-target and we put Simpson into transition plays. While the effort and the energy were there, our turnover rate was too high."

Jessup allowed goals in the 18th and 28th minute, however, Ioan Muresan got the Warriors offense back on track when he scored in the 33rd minute on an assist from Alvaro Ascencio, in what was his third goal of the year.

Lazaga said the first goal was a key play that helped his squad keep a positive mindset. "That goal got us some confidence going the other way and pretty soon we found ourselves making some of the simple connections we were missing earlier."

Just nine minutes later, Paul Anderson scored his first goal of the season to tie the match as the Warriors and Red Hawks were locked at two headed into the break.

To open the second half Idris grabbed the lead for Jessup as Heriberto Trevino delivered the pass in the 70th minute for the 3-2 advantage.

Simpson made their final attack in the 79th minute to tie the game at 3-3, but the Warriors took less than 30-seconds to answer the Red Hawks equalizer with their own offensive threat.

The final goal of the game would find the back of the net by Idris for the go-ahead goal, his second on the day and on the season.

Lazaga said the thing he learned about his squad in the match was that when they play together, they have the capability to come from behind and win. "If we focus on the principles learned, play with pace, and be dynamic the results will follow. Today we played with some real grit and that's a good place to start."

The Warriors will be off this weekend and return to the field Monday when they'll host Pacific Union College at 4 p.m.
