Warriors put up a strong fight in conference opener

The William Jessup Warriors volleyball team lost a four-set battle in their conference opener.

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The William Jessup volleyball team's conference season got underway Friday evening as they hosted Life Pacific University in what turned out to be a close match throughout, but Jessup went down in four sets losing 25-21, 23-25, 27-25, & 25-20.

It was an uphill battle in the first set for Jessup as they fell behind quickly and eventually trailed 19-8. A kill from senior Taylor Jacky sparked a run for the Jessup as they nabbed 10 of the next 11 points. However, the run tapered off and Jessup went on to lose the set, 25-20.

Jessup was able to quickly turn things around in set two as they led 11-2 early on. Despite a late run by Life Pacific bringing the game within one point, Jessup was able to hang on and claim the set 25-20.

Once the third set began, Jessup was down early once again as they surrendered the first five points. Jessup would claw their way back and bring the set within a point as they were down 10-9 after Brianne Whitt logged a kill. As the set lingered on, Jessup would string together another scoring spurt as they jumped in front 25-24. The set would eventually come to an end with Jessup unable to close out Life Pacific, losing in extra points, 27-25.

The fourth and final set was a gridlock battle as it saw multiple lead changes and was tied five different times but Jessup couldn't regain the lead and would lose the set 25-20.

Hannah Henriksen and Taylor Jacky led Jessup in kills with 14 and 13 respectively while Kacey Berger ended the night with a team-high 4 service aces. Jessica Williams led with 27 assists and Brianne Whitt ended with 14. On the receiving end, Jacky led with 19 digs and Berger finished with 17 of her own.

Jessup will take the floor again Saturday afternoon at 12 pm as conference play continues with Hope International University coming to town.
