Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Josh Carson

Jessup suffers first home loss to No. 11 Westmont

ROCKLIN, Calif. - After an emotional victory at the buzzer on Thursday night, the William Jessup men's basketball team suffered their first home loss of the season, falling to No. 11 Westmont 77-64.

Jessup (11-6, GSAC 3-2) struggled from the field against Westmont (17-1, GSAC 6-0) and trailed from wire-to-wire.

Head coach Lance Von Vogt said, "Westmont outplayed us in every facet of the game. Injuries and player availability played a factor in having to go with another new line-up against a team as good as Westmont, it made a tough hill to climb. Today we didn't climb it."

Westmont jumped out to an early seven-point lead but two free-throws from Tarren Storey-Way and a three from Wilson LaShells helped Jessup cut the lead down to four.

Erik Kinnebrew rifled a dime to Jayden DeJoseph on a cutting layup at the 9:55 mark to bring the Warriors within three. A few minutes later, Isaiah Milan executed a quick left-to-right crossover and dished to Oliver Amajoyi for the slam but Westmont still led 21-18.

Jessup pulled to within two with 6:09 remaining however, Westmont had their way from then on, ending the half on a 15-3 run. The Warriors found themselves down 35-21.

The home Warriors came out of the locker room hot with an Amajoyi put-back layup and two three-pointers from Luis Medearis propelling them on an 8-0 run. Following a three by Westmont, Storey-Way answered with a triple of his own with 17:51 to play.

After back-and-forth action, Medearis scored on an acrobatic layup bringing the deficit to seven. Milan scored his first field-goal of the night on a three with 11:39 remaining to cut the Westmont lead to six.

Jessup was able to hang around but every run they made was matched by Westmont as they fell 77-64.

Amajoyi had his best game of the season with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Four of his made field goals were dunks, with three coming in the second half. Medearis and Storey-Way followed Amajoyi in the scoring column with 12 and 10 respectively.

Von Vogt commented on the importance of establishing steady play, "Consistency is the most difficult thing to find in competitive sports and we're still searching for it. I am hoping we will be back to full strength by next week and be able to get into a rhythm moving forward."

Jessup will travel to Costa Mesa to take on Vanguard in GSAC play on Thursday night. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
