Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Josh Carson

Warriors mount second-half comeback at Vanguard

Isaiah Milan enters the top-five all-time in assists

COSTA MESA, Calif. - It was a tale of two halves Thursday night as the Jessup Men's basketball team picked up the road win at Vanguard 93-83.

Jessup (12-6, GSAC 4-2) trailed by double-digits at the half against Vanguard (10-8, GSAC 3-3) but had a bounce-back second half scoring 65 points to pick up the win.

Head Coach Lance Von Vogt said, "Vanguard came out with great energy and we didn't handle their pressure well in the first half. At halftime, we simplified a few things and talked about playing with poise and composure. The guys stayed together, competed throughout, and executed fantastically in the second half."

The Lions and Warriors traded baskets from opening tip to the 12-minute mark, as Vanguard led 15-14. From there, the home team went on an 8-0 run but the Warriors' Tarren Storey-Way curbed the momentum with a put-back layup. This was followed by a Luis Medearis three-pointer to bring the deficit to four.

Although Jessup was hanging tough down 34-25 with 5:31 to play in the half, Vanguard's 16 points off 15 first-half Warrior turnovers gave them a 44-28 halftime advantage.

The Warriors began mounting their comeback to start the second half with a Medearis three. Austin Dill connected on a three at the 16:42 mark to trim Vanguard's lead to 13.

A layup from Oliver Amajoyi and three by Isaiah Milan cut the deficit to 8. Jessup continued to chip away at the lead until they eventually gained a 67-66 advantage with 5:31 remaining by way of a Jayden DeJoseph triple.

From this point forward Jessup pulled away down the stretch, outscoring Vanguard 65-39 in the second half to win 93-83.

Coming into this game, senior point guard Milan was five assists shy of entering into the top-five all-time in assists. He dropped seven dimes and now finds himself in elite company.

Von Vogt commented on Milan's accomplishment saying, "Isaiah is a competitor and he's learning how to be a complete player. He came to us as a scorer, but he has really worked hard to develop his passing and moving into the top-five for assists in school history is an indication of how far he's come."

Jessup ended the night with five players in double-figures. Medearis led the way with 22, Milan followed with 20, and Storey-Way led all bench scorers adding 15. Dill also scored 12 and Amajoyi rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10. Jaylen Johnson returned to action and contributed valuable minutes for the Warriors.

Von Vogt believes this was a complete team win saying, "Tarren really gave us a lift off the bench tonight with his toughness, defense, and scoring while Jayden DeJoseph hit a couple of big threes. Oliver really held down the middle while Dill and Jaylen made all the hustle plays."

The Warriors' next match-up will be Saturday at San Diego Christian. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
