Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Josh Carson

Late run propels Jessup past SDC

Luis Medearis enters the top-10 all-time in scoring

EL CAJON, Calif. - The Jessup Men's basketball team used a late second-half run to win 89-70 over San Diego Christian Saturday afternoon.

Jessup (13-6, 5-2) trailed SDC (4-10, 0-7) by four points with 11:17 to play before opening up a massive 32-9 run to secure the victory.

Head Coach Lance Von Vogt said, "We started to play our brand of defense with toughness and stopped settling for the first available shot which in turn led to better shots. We began attacking with poise and got into the bonus relatively early in the second-half which paid dividends with us making our free throws."

The Warriors started strong with a steal by Luis Medearis that led to an Isaiah Milan lay-up. Austin Dill connected on back-to-back buckets with a mid-range jumper and a layup to put the Warriors ahead 7-4. Jessup then embarked on a 12-5 run to give them a 10-point advantage with 12:20 left in the half.

A few plays later, Medearis connected on a three-point field goal to stretch the Warrior lead to 27-19. With that basket he entered the top-10 all-time in scoring doing so in just his second season with Jessup.

Von Vogt commented on his accomplishment, "It's no surprise that Luis moved into the top-10. He's a four-level scorer who is a tough match-up for opponents because of his versatility."

Jessup continued to hold the lead as Oliver Amajoyi connected from three then Jaylen Johnson ended the half with two perfect trips to the free-throw line to give the Warriors a 44-38 advantage.

Early in the second half, the Hawks managed to tie the score at 48 apiece, but a Jayden DeJoseph triple provided the necessary answer to push the Warriors ahead.

At the 15:20 mark, SDC took their first advantage since leading 4-3 as they jumped ahead 52-51.Milan, the San Diego native, quickly retook the lead for Jessup with a three-point play. Still, the Hawks pulled ahead again to lead 61-57.

Then, the floodgates opened. Jessup scored 13 unanswered points to go ahead by nine and never looked back. This was all part of a 32-9 run to lift the Warriors to victory.

Jessup's top scorer Milan posted 10 of his 22 points during the late second-half run. Medearis followed him with 15, Amajoyi scored 11, and Dill finished with 10 on the night. The Warrior bench also added 22 points, with Jaylen Johnson adding eight points in just 11 minutes of play.

Von Vogt applauded the effort of his bench unit and Johnson saying, "We are a deep team and Jaylen Johnson brings a sense of urgency to the game. His live body, toughness, and intensity are things that we need every time out and he's starting to give that to us. I look forward to seeing his progress the rest of the season. He should play a big role for us down the stretch."

The Warriors will look to extend their winning streak to three games as they play host to OUAZ Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
