Warriors Sweep Opening Weekend

Moser walk-off gives the Warriors the sweep

LINCOLN, Calif. – Jessup baseball started off the season on a high note winning both games on Friday and looked to continue that first-weekend momentum against the Corban University Warriors with another doubleheader Saturday where they were successful as they swept the weekend against Corban giving them a 4-0 record.

Game 1: Jessup 7, Corban 1

The Warriors took the field riding a strong presence at the plate, and that presence immediately made itself known with a leadoff double by Kawaiola Takemura and an Anders Green sac-fly to put the Warriors on the board in the first inning. The Warriors added another run in the second before building up steam in the bottom of the third.

In the third inning, bases loaded, Joseph Luevano came in and hit a single through the left side to bring in Mike Shoenberger and Green putting the Warriors up by four. Takemura also headed to the plate in the third inning with bases loaded and continued the momentum with a single to right field to score pinch-runner Shion Matsushita and Connor Braun.

Jessup's defense was strong, only giving up one run in the top of the sixth, but Jessup added one more run in the bottom of the eighth from a Shoenberger single to left as the Warriors ended game one with a win, 7-1.

Jessup's bullpen had strong control on the mound and kept Corban's bats quiet, only giving up four hits overall. Brad Jones started and went three innings for the Warriors, only giving up one hit and one walk while earning two strikeouts before Max Moreno came in.

Head coach, Trevor Paine, was pleased with how his pitchers performed. "Jones gave us a great three innings to start, and freshman Max Moreno was awesome out of the pen." Moreno earned the win for the Warriors with a final line of two hits, one run, two walks, and two strikeouts in his just over three innings  of work. Brett Wetteland also took time on the mound before Nolan Murphy closed it out.

Game 2: Jessup 5, Corban 3

The second game for the Warriors had a different start. The Warriors had some trouble finding openings in the field and Corban was able to score three runs to give them the advantage. But in the bottom of the sixth the Warriors were able to answer back adding a run to the board with a solo shot from Anders Green that Paine said "provided the spark" for the team. That spark got the Warriors going as Jesus Duran came up in the bottom of the seventh and hit a two-run homer to tie it up and stretch to extra innings, 3-3.

That home run was exactly what the Warriors needed as the fire continued in the bottom of the eighth with Dylan Moser ending it for good with a walk-off two-run homer. The Warriors taking it 5-3 for the 4-game sweep.

Game two had Kristian Hernandez starting for the Warriors before Chase Marcoe and Shawn Roberts came out of the pen for a couple of innings. Jordan Yu took the mound for three innings and ended his time with one hit, one walk, and four strikeouts. Brett Wetteland made his second appearance on the day to close out the game for the Warriors. Wetteland went three-up-three-down, earning the win for Jessup. Paine recognized the bullpen's work saying, "Game two require great efforts out of the pen from Murphy, Yu, and Wettleand to put up zeros and let us hit our way back into the game."

Luevano and Duran each went 4-for-6 at the plate with three and four RBIs respectively. Green had a similar day going 4-for-7 with a home run and two RBIs. The Warriors ended the day with 17 hits and 12 RBIs on their 12 runs scored.

"It was a special day for our guys. I told them after the game that the ability to win close games is a skill and we were able to answer our first test." Paine spoke highly of the team's effort over the weekend, but he said they will, "look to improve on things because we certainly weren't perfect."

Jessup returns to McBean January 28th in a midweek matchup against nationally recognized Lewis and Clark State College at 1:00 PM.
