Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Josh Carson

Warriors fall to No. 23 Firestorm in high-scoring affair

Austin Dill notches career-high 22 points

ROCKLIN, Calif. - Saturday's matchup between the Jessup men's basketball team and Arizona Christian featured up-tempo action where the Warriors (14-7, 6-3) eventually fell to the No. 23 Firestorm (16-5, 6-3) 99-89.

Austin Dill had a career-night scoring 22 points and grabbing 11 rebounds as both teams eclipsed their season averages in points per game.

Coach Lance Von Vogt acknowledged the high-level of play in the match-up, "Today's game was what we call good on good. ACU is as talented as any team in the country and they made plays down the stretch. I thought the difference in the game was their ability to get into the bonus early in each half and capitalize by making their free-throws."

ACU held a decisive advantage from the charity stripe, making 28-of-31 free-throws while the home team made just 7-of-11 on the day.

In the opening half, Dill contributed a layup and a jumper scoring four of the first six Warrior points.

Later on in the half, Erik Kinnebrew checked in and connected on a three-pointer assisted by Jayden DeJoseph. Both players flipped the script on the next possession as Kinnebrew fed DeJoseph for the triple, cutting the deficit to 26-24 with 8:58 remaining.

After more back-and-forth action, the half ended with the Firestorm ahead 45-40.

The Warriors continued to battle in the second half, taking a 53-52 lead on a DeJoseph three assisted by Isaiah Milan. The Firestorm regained the lead, but Dill took it back for the Warriors on a layup with 13:29 remaining.

The Warriors stretched their advantage as Kinnebrew threw down a two-handed slam plus the foul. Dill continued the dunking exhibition when he added his own one-handed flush a little over four minutes later and Jessup led 81-75.

However, the Warriors failed to seal the deal in the last five minutes.

Von Vogt spoke about the final stretch saying, "We played exceptionally well for the first 15 minutes of the second half but the scoreboard only had us up 84-80 with five minutes to go. ACU capitalized with more timely plays and made free-throws to keep it close when we made our runs. Then they closed it out with some big-time poise and composure."

Behind Dill's 22 points, Luis Medearis followed with 21, Kinnebrew added 13 off the bench, DeJoseph contributed 11, and Milan rounded-out the double-digit scorers with 10.

While the result wasn't what Von Vogt hoped for, he's optimistic that his team will respond positively.

"When you play in an elite league like the GSAC you are going to play other high-level teams. Tonight they got the better of us. The great thing is we get the chance to correct our mistakes and grow from this."

Jessup will attempt to bounce back in their next game on Thursday at home against Life Pacific. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
