Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Josh Carson

Warriors hold on late to defeat LPU 77-71

Storey-Way, Lyon post career-highs in points

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The Jessup men's basketball team got back to their winning ways Thursday night as they dominated the interior en route to a  77-71 win over Life Pacific.

The Warriors saw two players notch career-highs in points as Tarren Storey-Way scored 20 off the bench and Matt Lyon contributed 14 points on 4-for-5 from three-point range.

Jessup (15-7, 7-3) led for most of the game against Life Pacific (6-14, 2-8) and outscored LPU in the paint 28 to 8. Jessup's bench also had a strong performance besting LPU 31 to 24.

Coach Lance Von Vogt commented on the two positive areas of play, "We had a size advantage and we felt like that's where we could have success. Also, our second unit struggled at first, so I got on them a little bit and they responded. Tarren led the way but we had other good performances off the bench as well."

The Warriors started off strong with threes by Lyon and Jayden DeJoseph to go up 8-0 less than four minutes in.

LPU fought back to take a 23-21 lead with 8:06 remaining but two-straight layups from Austin Dill helped to stop LPU's momentum.

The first-half ended with back-to-back layups by Storey-Way as the Warriors led 39-33 heading into the locker room.

In the second half, Erik Kinnebrew connected on a three-pointer assisted by Storey-Way, who then followed up his assist by converting on an and-1 layup the next possession. The Warriors led 52-44 with 13:30 to play.

With 4:39 left, Dill added his own and-1 to put Jessup ahead by eight. The Warriors never trailed in the second half and would go on to win 77-71.

Storey-Way led all scorers with 20, Dill followed with 18, and Lyon added 14.

Von Vogt was pleased with Lyon's effort in the absence of Isaiah Milan, "Matt did a great job stepping into the starting role and holding it down for Zay (Milan). He is going to keep getting better and will really help us down the stretch this year. I'm happy to see his confidence grow every time out. "

Jessup will look to extend their winning streak as they'll face No. 18 Hope International at home on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
