Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Quinton Lilley

Warriors win-streak moves to three after 66-56 win over ACU

Jessup's 3rd quarter defense proved to be the difference.

ROCKLIN, Calif. - After a nail-biting win, Thursday night over OUAZ the Jessup women's basketball team completed the two-game sweep of the Arizona schools when they beat Arizona Christian 66-56  Saturday afternoon in Warrior Arena.

The win now gives Jessup (13-7, 6-3) a three-game win streak tied for their longest of the year. Coach Kurt Westendorp said that while he's excited about the Warriors' winning ways, he still feels there's work to be done.

"I wouldn't say that we've hit our groove over the past three games, but we've done a great job just grinding out wins. We've won games in a few different ways, and today our defense carried us."

None of that was more evident than in the third quarter when the Warriors allowed just six points as Jessup outscored ACU by seven ultimately proving to be the difference in the contest.

The opening quarter saw the Warriors jump out to an early 10-5 lead and then Elizabeth Roark gave Jessup their biggest lead of the quarter at 18-12 with 1:38 left in the frame. After 10 minutes of play, Jessup led 18-14.

In the second quarter, both teams traded baskets most of the frame as each team scored 17 points. The Warriors again built up a six-point lead by the 6:13 mark, but the Firestorm responded by cutting Jessup's lead to one twice in the quarter.

By halftime, the Warriors held a 35-31 advantage.

In the third, while Jessup only scored 13 points, it was their defense that led the way as they held ACU to just 2-for-19 from the field as they scored just six points.

Westendorp said the third-quarter defense was key to earning the victory. "In the third, we were very connected on the defensive end. We forced long possessions and mostly low-quality shots."

By the end of the frame Jessup led by double digits as they looked to close out the win in the fourth.

The final 10 minutes saw ACU attempt to make several runs cutting the lead to seven on two occasions but the Warriors never let the Firestorm get any closer as they took the win by 10.

Westendorp said that while his team had some issues with turnovers, he was pleased with their execution when they needed it most. "ACU is a very active defensive team and they did a good job forcing us into some turnovers today. When we did a better job moving the ball we found some good looks and made the necessary plays to win."

Offensively, Jessup used a balanced attack as four starters scored in double figures led by Miranda Zaragoza who had 19 points and 18 rebounds. Creonah Bryant followed with 17, Liz Gehweiler filled the stat sheet nicely with 11 points seven assists, and five rebounds and Roark rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10.

Jessup will look to keep their win streak alive Thursday night when they host Life Pacific at 5:30 p.m.
