Warriors complete weekend sweep against No. 18 HIU

Three-point defense key in victory

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The Jessup men's basketball team looked to complete the weekend sweep against No. 18 Hope International on Saturday and did just that, prevailing 96-86. With the win, the Warriors evened up the season series with the Royals.

Coach Lance Von Vogt commented on his team's unselfish play saying, "I really liked how we shared the ball tonight which led to a lot of wide-open looks. Our shooters were comfortable and ready to shoot."

Jessup (16-7, 8-3) connected on 13 threes while holding HIU (14-9, 3-8) to just seven, which is under their per-game average.

Von Vogt complimented his team on their defensive intensity, "We took a hit with our three-point defense on Thursday and I think our guys were disappointed with that effort, so today we did a better job of locating the shooters."

HIU jumped out to an early 12-4 lead, but Luis Medearis began to heat up for the Warriors, connecting on a trio of three-pointers to cut the deficit to four with 13:50 remaining in the half.

Jessup pulled ahead and increased their lead as Jayden DeJoseph netted two shots from beyond the arc on consecutive possessions. The Warriors held a 35-29 advantage at the 5:07 mark.

Erik Kinnebrew found Amajoyi for a two-handed slam to stretch the lead to 14 with 1:22 to play.

As the clock ticked down, Kinnebrew launched a deep three-pointer that found the bottom of the net and the Warriors led 51-33 going into the locker room.

Jessup picked up where they left off to begin the second half, going on a 14-7 run to lead 65-40 at the 14:32 mark.

The Royals responded with a 13-2 run to cut the deficit to 14, but Kinnebrew and Sam Howlin answered with back-to-back layups and Jessup held a 71-55 advantage.

Medearis connected on another three and Austin Dill added a layup and the Warriors led by 18 with 3:40 to play.

From there, Jessup made 12 free throws to hold off HIU down the stretch, winning 96-86.

Medearis led the Warriors in scoring with 25, Dill followed with 20, Kinnebrew added 15, and DeJoseph rounded out the double-digit scorers with 14.

Oliver Amajoyi contributed six points and 10 rebounds in 31 minutes and added a strong defensive effort.

Von Vogt spoke highly of Amajoyi's defense, "Oliver is one of the keys to our team and tonight he showed why by matching up against a guy like Josh Powell-Davis. He fought like a champion."

Jessup will look to keep their winning streak going as they hit the road for a match-up with first-place, No. 4 Westmont on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
